I have been reading here in anticipation of setting up my Vonage service. I hope I explain this clearly:
I have set up in on one computer: Comcast broadband to SB4100, to MN-500 router. Upstairs, I have computer with MN-510 USB adapter.
Ideally, I would like to set up my RT31P2 Upstairs in my office so I can not only plug in a cordless phone base unit but a fax machine that is in the office as well.
Will this work? I realize I may be bypassing the QoS option this way, but is it even possible to have the phone adapter inside the MN-510 adapter? In other words following instructions for "Installation with Multiple Computers (Alternate Setup)", but placing the RT31P2 inside the MN-510 adapter rather than the router (blue box in diagram)? |

There are 4 options: 1) You can use the RT31P2 in your office, but doing it with the MN-510 USB adapter could be difficult - You would have to use Internet Connection Sharing (assuming that your office PC is running Windows XP - if not you would have to set up proxies which would be much more involved), which runs the internet through your PC to the RT31P2. If you did it this way your PC would have to be on 24/7 or whenever the phone was needed. 2) If you really wanted the RT31P2 in your office the best way to do it would be get a wireless Access Point or Gaming Adapter (converting the wireless to a RJ-45 ethernet port) then connect the AP to a switch (giving you a port for the RT31P2 and your PC). This would probably cost between $80 and $150. 3) You could buy a cordless telephone set that has data ports in the handsets. 4) You could use your existing home wiring (assuming that you have wiring), transfering Vonage to all the phone jacks in your house. |

You definitely can't plug a USB adapter into the RT31P2, so your only hope is to connect the WAN port of the RT31P2 into a network card on the computer, then enable Internet Sharing for the USB adapter on the computer.
As you said previously, you won't get the benefits of QoS with that layout.
Edit: Or you could try all that stuff arcking just posted before I. |

Thank you, Arcking & Paul. Even with my limited knowledge, I kinda figured that was the case. Guess I'll just move the fax machine downstairs!
Thanks again. |

This thread reminds me of this joke:
| Quote: | There was a husband and a wife. The husband was very sick, so the wife took him to the hospital and the doctor checked him out. Then the doctor asked the wife to come into his office so they could talk about what was wrong with her husband.
He explained that, if she wanted her husband to live, she would have to pamper him, wait on him hand and foot, and not challenge him or argue with him -- her husband needed absolute rest and no stress whatsoever. However, if her husband did any work or moved around much or got upset about anything, he would die. The doctor asked if she understood these conditions, and the wife assured him that she did.
When the wife came out, the husband asked her, “so what is the matter with me? Am I going to die?” And the wife said, “Yes, honey, I'm afraid you're going to die.” |
