Just a post about this user's experience with Vonage after a month of service.

First, the manuals shipped with the ATA (Moto version) are rather vague. However by reviewing the comments in this forum and at dslreports web site installation is quite simple. Once you understand the concepts.

Access the ATA using your web browser pointed to and assigns an IP address and subnet mask. Enter the IP addresses of your Gateway and your ISP DNS servers. In the Advanced Config Tab; deselect the DHCP/NAT option.

I tried putting the ATA in front of the router and behind with good results in either position. Having the ATA in front of the router required using a static IP address. Placing the device behind the router one can use a private IP address. For security purposes, it appears to be the best practice to have the ATA behind the router.

So far the quality of the voice has been very good and consistent with only a couple of "beeps" on the line once and a faint "whooshing" sound but that seems to have cleared up. Using a good quality phone and keeping it away form electronic interference does make a difference.

Now for the "impressive features".

Took the ATA with me to a well-known hotel in Boston that provides T-1 line access in the guest rooms. Plugged the ATA in and "voila" .. Dial tone!
Was able to access the Internet and place calls using the small portable phone I brought along. Worked like a charm!

Took the ATA to a friend’s house this weekend that had Cable Internet access. Plugged the adapter into their Linksys wireless router. After setting the ISP's DNS addresses, once again, Internet access on for my laptop and dial tone on the phone.

Complaints: None, other than the manuals

Positives: Flexibility, portability and cost savings.

Bottom Line: It’s a BIG WINNER! ... Waiting for the reaction from the BELLS ... "This changes EVERYTHING!"

I take it your router does not provide DHCP?

The router that I use assigns the IP address from my ISP to the WAN port and anything connects to the internal ports is given a IP from the router that is local.

So for some installations you would need to enable DHCP.

Yes, somewhere in the loop, for most situations, DHCP needs to be provided.

However, in the situations outlined DHCP is not enabled on the ATA

Scenario I.

ISP>>>DSL Modem >>>WAN Port ATA (Public IP)>>>LAN Port ATA>>>4 Port Switch>>>WAN Port Router (2nd Public IP)>>>LAN Port Router>>>NIC-A Small Business Server>>>NIC-B Small Business Server>>>8 Port Switch>>>Workgroup PC’s

SBS provides DHCP and private IP addresses to all SBS LAN Workstations

Dial Tone to RJ-11 Port I on ATA provides Vonage Connection to Phone

DSL Filter from DSL Line to 4 Port ComShare 750>>>Phone Port=Portable Phone/Answering Machine (Distinctive Ring One)

ComShare 750 FAX Port=US Robotics External Modem (Distinctive Ring Two)
Connects via RS-232 Cable to Com Port I on SBS Server. (All in-coming FAX received into Shared Fax Folder on Server.)

ComShare 750 Modem Port=Phone/Answering Machine (Distinctive Ring Three)

Scenario II. (Preferred)

ISP>>>DSL Modem>>>4 Port Switch>>>WAN Port (Public IP) Router>>>LAN Port 1 >>>ATA (Private IP Address) - Gateway=Private IP of Router – DNS=ISP’s Addresses – Port Forwarding on Router as recommended.

LAN Port 2 of Router>>>NIC-A of SBS Server … rest as above

Scenario III

Hotel and using a Cable Modem.

Configure IP Address for ATA
Configure DNS Server IP Addresses for Location’s ISP
DHCP unchecked.
Reboot ATA
Plug in Phone and wait for Dial Tone
Place Call(s)
Disassemble and Check Out!
