I say go for it! I was paying $60 plus for Verizon service and was getting nothing. I now have the 500 minute plan and it is costing me about $17 month and the service has been great. I have only had a couple issues and was able to call and get them fixed very quickly. Even if I had to pay the $60 for the device, I am still making out!

I don't mean to bash Vonage in particular, since I run into the same sort of thing often elsewhere. I am frustrated that it's so hard, and has taken me so long to ferret out all the relevant facts, and even now they're still not clear. I'm still considering what to do, but all these niggling compliations makes a decision really hard to make. After all this, I'm sorely tempted to throw in the towel.

As you said, many of the other Voip companies out there are guilty of the same sins. Aside from Voip, your only other options are cell phone companies and POTS providers. But those two are more guilty of the sins you mentioned than almost any other business out there.

Given those choices, I feel pretty comfortable with Vonage.

I purchased a Linksys PAP2 phone adapter from Best Buy, and going through the activation process resulted in a $30 activation charge, on top of having to pay $59.99 for the adapter itself.

So personally, my experience is suggesting to me that you'd be better off with signing up first and waiting on whatever free router they're going to send you.

I don't even qualify for the rebate (that has a twelve week turnaround time according to the form) because of the fact that I'm a Best Buy employee.

Between the $90 startup cost to get an account and the fact that the Vonage account setup site told me for a week that my telephone number wasn't valid, thereby not allowing to continue in the existing number transfer process, has really started to sour me on the benefits of Vonage.

As a member of Best Buy's Geek Squad, I'm the person who does the most active promotion of the service in the store. I'm going to find it difficult to keep the enthusiasm I had previously for introducing many skeptical customers to Vonage in store on a daily basis.

(Sorry about the rant, I'm just frustrated at the amount of cash I spent today to get to this point).

Hey Dude, that is not true! All Best Buy employee's qualify for the rebate. Also, when Vonage started charging an activation fee, they also started to give the first month of service free. I know the rebates take a long time to get, but rebates for wireless phones take just as long...

Straight from the rebate:

I got a PAP2 from a Radio Shack store.
It came with a rebate offer, so my net cost would just be the couple of bucks for sales tax. I was not charged any connection or installation fee. I have been very pleased with the PAP2. Comcast, where I live, is not reliable, but when my internet is working, the PAP2 works flawlessly.

I have not had the problems that others complain about in regard to customer servive at Vonage. Their call center in the Philipines is filled will people who speak English with accents I cannot understand, but I have had no problems getting connected with someone in some US tech department afterwards.

I have a friend, who actually also sent me a referral to get Vonage and so got herself 2 months free which was credited to her account the day I signed up, who got her Onage device directly from Vonage. She got the combined router adapter and had problems with it, and was able to switch to a PAP2.

The one nice thing about Voip in general is that it creates far less network traffic than many people expect, meaning that most cable broadband connections have more than enough capability to handle.

I'm always pretty impressed with how well the online multiplayer game Battlefield 2 does with it's built-in Voip, as the game allows multiple levels of squad and unit com channels to go on once in 64-player games that normally send large amounts of data back and forth with little lag time.

So a question to those who bought an adapter retail and got your activation waived, when did you do it? Has anyone gotten the discount in recent days or weeks? I wonder if it's something they no longer offer, or if it's luck of the draw (and the latter makes me crazy; I hate it when you have to beg, plead, drop sly hints, or say the magic words for something they just ought to be up front about). Did you activate by phone or on the web?
