Ok, a little update. Today I had time to call Verizon and the 3rd party DSL provider. I know you said to call Verizon, but I had to call the DSL company after Verizon as that is what Verizon said to do.
Well the bad news is, that neither Verizon or the DSL provider can provide me with DSL faster then 3Mbps due to Verizon's outdated phone system in my area. I'm getting 5Mbps right now on Road runner. They both refused to sell me DSL without a dial tone from Verizon and said if I signed up for DSL then canceled the dial tone DSL service would be automaticly canceled. They would both penalize me for living outside the "main network" and tack on a $5 per month service fee for doing so. That means that I would be paying for a faster speed level (of 5Mbps) but only be getting 3Mpbs, the base line service. They said if they ever allowed DSL without dial-tone I would be penalized another $5-7 per month to have "Solo-DSL".
So, I guess DSL is out of the question! Its would be more expensive then Road Runner for a slower speed service, plus I would still have to pay $19 per month for Verizon's most basic dial-tone package. Makes no sense at all. I don't understand why DSL is so hard to get and so overpriced!
So, I'll be staying with Road Runner for cable powered internet at a good price.
Now, all that is left to do is sign-up for Vonage and begin the number port. Thanks for your help! |

Just a quick observation that may be useful to some...
Due to a court ruling that the Gang of Four won (SBC, Qwest, Verizon and Bellsouth,) all CLECS aren't accepting new customers. The phone companies no longer have to share their lines, therefore the monopoly has been restored.
I'm grandfathered in on an alternate carrier (Corecomm,) but any new lines around here will have to come from the Imperial Order of the SBC Empire.
Which means Voip is now the only direct means of wireline phone competition! |
