Hallo, i just found this Vonage website while browsing for a new linksys wireless router i was going to buy. Vonage sounds really good talking about the price and service it got.
but im not really sure now after reading some forums here where ppl have had prolems with that wierd router and the customer service. i was actually planning on gettin a regular dsl service and then just buy a wireless router ...which would make my phonebill come to almost 100 bucks.

so please let me know what this service really is about and is there any other service that offers ip voice....
also are there any other BROADBAND ROUTERS besides this one that are recommendable?

Prestige,

Many people in this forum are here because they are encountering problems with either their quality of calls or with their equipment. However, I want to make clear to you that Vonage has over 500,000 customers and most of them (i.e. 70-80%) have never encountered any significant issues so please do not take the posts here as representative of the experience of the typical Vonage customer.

Having said that, every Voip company will have quality issues. In my case, the rt31p2 has been a steadfast router with no issues to think of. The only issues I have had have been from my ISP becoming flaky in their service.

Regarding the dsl option. Most services do not offer just the dsl. In your neighborhood, they might offer just the dsl. Most telcos require the purchase of the regular phone line as well. So if you get the absolute bare minimum phone service it will probably run you somewhere in the low $20. Then if you get the unlimited plan, it will raise you "phone" bill to about $46. This is still far better than getting an unlimited local and long distance plan with your regular phone company. Just some things to think about.

In my case, I already had cable internet and switching to Vonage has saved me roughly $40 in my phone bill. I have the 500 minute plan.

Ditto from me Prestige...

However, I would hesitate to recommend Vonage to those who are not computer or network literate.

I have had a few minor problems with the service, all before my POTS number was ported over to Vonage. After the virtual number was gone, so were the problems. That may have been a coincidence.

The last 4 months since then have been great!

it was purely a speculative guess. I was working on the assumption that the vast majority of customers never experienced major issues and on top of that, most of them would probably talk directly with Vonage to resolve the issues than to come on this forum. Just purely speculative that's all. Nothing more.

I don't think anything on this board is even remotely representative of the entire Vonage customer base.

If you assume a total of 500,000 Vonage customers, and that everyone who is a forum member here is also a Vonage customer, than only 2.7% of the Vonage customer base is represented on these forums. Within that microcosm, you can make the assumption that the majority came to these forums doing Web searches, looking for help with their service or suggestions.

Personally, after ordering my Vonage service, I got panicky and did a very broad Google search on Vonage. This web site is listed right after www.vonage.com. I read some of the horror stories here and got very scared. Luckily, my service has been excellent for the most part. Though I am fairly network and computer literate, I really didn't need that literacy to set-up and maintain my Vonage equipment and service.

You may be referring to my comment Josh...

All I am saying is that I am worried that if I referred Vonage to any of my friends, and they were NOT network literate, or at least had some basic knowledge of how this all works, that I would be getting calls to troubleshoot their "latch up" for them! I don't need to deal with that!

Sidebar... A friend of mine who runs an ISP in a nearby town had an irate customer come in, furious because he couldn't get the Vonage router hooked up. He said he needed one of those cable modem thingy's! The old guy had dial up service!!! His son had told him if he had Vonage he could call LD for free, so he ordered it!

Of course it was his own son who had referred him, and I guess I would know better than to do something that insane, but I don't know too many people who have even the limited knowledge I have!

I love my Vonage service! I am just not quite ready to recommend it to someone to whom I might have to explain how to hook it all up!

I agree. I wouldn't actually recommend Vonage to anyone not very technology literate unless I was willing to give them the tech support they might need. Of course, if I referred them the two months of free service may be enough to offset the costs of that support Smile
