My old netgear never had an issue keeping my dyndns ip "registered" and alive as it periodically updated the server. But, my RT31P2 doesn't seem to perform the same, and I've had my dyndns name expire twice now. My IP# doesn't change all that often with Comcast so perhaps the router doesn't do an update unless it sees a change. Has anyone else run into this? I really don't want to "subscribe" for a single dynamic IP. I could set it up as semi-static somewhere for free, but it wouldn't catch the changes then.

Suggestions, or am I missing something?

My Netgear MR814V2 doesn't seem to want to update either, so if you have any suggestions for me, I am all ears.

It seems to me that updates aren't done unless your IP changes (which ~never happens to me).

Your less convenient alternative is to use a software client.

Do you have any idea on how long your ISP's IP lease is to you? My Verizon DSL acct updates about every 30 minutes, my Comcast cable connection updates about every 3 days. No problems with, but I'm using the WRT54GS router. I wouldn't be surprised if these only updated when the IP is renewed.

I get the exact same problem. It has gotten to the point where DynDNS has cancelled my account. This doesn't matter too much to me, because I am using no-ip and a software daemon for no-ip to keep my IP registered.

Just a bit annoying. Just another feature of the RT31P2 that doesn't work as advertised. Don't get me wrong, it's a good basic router and Voip device...but really, the features on this thing are severely lacking. Good thing I don't really need them...and good thing I didn't actually pay for it Smile

From my experience with the RT31P2 and the site this is what I have found out:

1. The RT31P2 will update the service only if the IP has changed. If it hasn't, then it will not ping

2. - How often can/should I update my hostname?

A Dynamic DNS hostname only needs to be updated when your IP address has changed. Any updates more frequently than this - from the same IP address - will be considered abusive by the update system and may result in your hostname becoming blocked. Any script which runs periodically should check to make sure that the IP has actually changed before making an update, or the host will become blocked. An exception to this is for users with mostly static IP addresses; you may update 24-35 days after your previous update with the same IP address to "touch" the record and prevent it from expiring. Users will receive an e-mail notification if a host has been unchanged for 30 days, hosts are deleted after 35 days without being updated unless you've purchased upgrade credit(s).

My solution:
on a computer that I leave on regularily, I installed a dyndns updater that will take care of the times when i exceed 30 days without an IP change.
