I'm waiting for my new hardware and was just thinking about a couple of things...

One of which is message waiting. Does Vonage offer any kind of message waiting indicators? Either with a studder tone or maybe some kind of signal/light on the phone?

If so what additional hardware will I need or special phone?

Yes.. stutter tone.

I've also written an application for the PC (windows) that will put an icon in your system tray when you have a message.

Thanks John, handy script btw - however I would prefer that it query the actual Vonage VoiceMail server than my email server.

I read in the manual that message indicator lights are supported on some phones-- anyone know which phones are supported?

Yes, I'd prefer that too.

Unfortunately, Vonage does not offer any sort of API or programmer interface to their services.

Version 2.0 is being designed right now (not coding yet) but will involve using the customer site (your login for Vonage) and will do what you want. It's a lot more work than V1, and V1 was really a proof of concept.

It's all done in my 'spare' time, and I don't get any donations really (one person has) so... when I get the coding bug.... I go for a while and work hard on it. I'm kind of just 'thinking' about the next ver. now... but it will be a reality soon.

As far as phones w/ message indicator lights, I have a panasonic cordless in my garage that has that. So I'm assuming any phone that has a message indicator light picks up on it by the stutter dial tone? That's my guess.

I thought the same thing being a telco guy myself I thought that any message indicator light capable phone would work. But according to the voicemail manual online it says that Vonage does not support some phones but fails to mention which phones it does support.

Both message waiting and stutter tones works with my Sprint cordless phone.

I had a voicemail the other day. The message light went on on my phone and the stutter tone is occuring.

I listened to the voicemail and deleted it (online) from both the inbox and the Trash. When I call in *123 it says no voicemails in my box.

But the stutter tone is still occurring and the message light is still on.

Is this normal?

I have a SonymSPP-ID975 cordless phone. But my guess is it has nothig to do with the phone as the stutter tone is occurring and the phone is picking that up to having the message light on.

Any ideas anyone?

I have 2 AT&T multiline business phones (models 972) and 2 Uniden 2.4GHZ cordless phones on my line and all of them work with the Vonage message waiting indicator.

I have had the same problem of deleting voicemails but still hearing the stutter dialtone, but it only seems to happen sporadically. If I listen to voicemails, then delete them and the stutter still occurs, if I call and check again and there are no voicemails and then hang up, no more stutter tone after that. I called Vonage and they say it has to do with the chip in certain phones (I can't remember what they called it). They said they are trying to do a software fix to avoid this is in the future.

All the noises, lights and beeps coming from your phone are being sent by the Cisco ATA or Motorola box and NOT from Vonage.

My Cisco ATA does not support message waiting illumination but does support stutter dial tone.

Here's how it works ....

When someone leaves you a voicemail, the voice mail sends a SIP INFO or NOTIFY message to Vonage's Proxy Server or Switch. The switch in turns has to send a similar message to your ATA/MOT box. The box, once it has the message, then turns on stutter dial tone or lights the light (which is nothing more than a 40-53 VDC power stream).

In practice, message notification is a low priority for the voice mail system and it's sometimes tardy in sending the message. In fact, there are loads of areas in the communcation path where message notification either won't go away or never appears.

Vonage appears to have changed out their voice messaging system 3 times in the last year. I might assume, they've had problems with their vendor.
