I've read all of posts in this forum in regards to Tivo and it's ability to call home for updates.

I've read that people are not having problems and some are having problems and some need a special dial prefix to get things to work.

My question is this... Given what hardware is sent out currently what should I expect my tivo to do when it tries to call home.

Vonage Tech Support says it won't work and they support it... Why is it that I've read that it does work, and why wouldn't Vonage support it?

What's the deal?

Here's the deal.... I started to have some problems with my DTivo not being successful with calling home. The problem is not Vonage at all even though they think it is... The problem is with Tivo's modem's. I just attached a Roadster 36k external modem to my tivo (purchased from Weakness preconfigured) entered the dial prefix of ,#319 and have been connecting without any problems at through Vonage.

Simply put.... If you need your Tivo to be able to call home through Vonage you must attach an external modem and have Tivo use it to make it's calls home.

Never had a problem with DTivo. Just changed the area code to include the 1 and it's worked ever since.

Some of the newer Tivo boxes are working with Vonage service. Although looks like Vonage doesnt support it http://www.vonage.com/learn_equipment.php and ther reason behind that I think is Vonage dial tone is not real dial tone that a modem requires. My opinion is that the handshake need to make the Tivo call is much much different than a normal PSTN dial tone. Thats why the use of ,#319 scenario.

I'm not trying to debate this; my DTivo is about 2 years old. Go figure.

I'm using a series 1 and it makes the daily call successfully. I had to set the bandwidth saver to highest quality on the website, though. Without that, it would not make a call.
