Wireless signals travel at the speed of light. Electricity travels at around 2/3 that speed.

So, the latency for fixed wireless isn't a physical necessity, it's just caused by limitations in the hardware and software.

(Note that that is for fixed wireless, with a tower on the ground. A satellite in geosynchronous orbit is always going to have bad latency)

Thanks paul248. I agree that this is a solvable problem.
I am still waiting to hear back from my ISP (logical.net) and from Vonage, both of whom I have emailed with inquires about this problem.

FYI: my original posts are under the heading:
Wireless Intenet Service - Problems with choppy connection
including Voip test results and attempted fixes so far..

The switch in Vonage boxes didn't make any difference, and I too assume the firmware is the same, so no difference in buffering.

Unfortunately, I am in my office with patients waiting...
I keep ducking in here to check for new posts.

Before you start a petition you should be armed with enough information. The burden of proof is on you.

ANYWAY, Eyedoc the residential package shows an upload speed of kbps I believe. Is that what you get on average for an upload speed?

I have every right to start a petition - and the petition IS to gain the proof - incase you havent noticed I started this thread to begin with so im not hijacking anything. Only reason I started the other thread was to keep the petition stand alone. Im trying to collect a list of users in this area that are having the same issue. If a mass of users are having the same issues, I really doubt its the users issue.

I have the same exact jitter problems in my office as I do at home, my office is in the same town. So if every user is using the same ISP then maybe the ISP can work with Vonage. The petition is an easy way to keep everyones information together, its hosted free, and we can direct the list to anyone who needs to see the info.

EDIT:
And another thing. I'm not running around screaming Vonage's service ****, I happen to love it when its working properly. If there IS an issue in the area I would like Vonage to look into it. They are not gonna spend the man power and money if I just happen to call up and tell them somethings wrong. However if we can collect enough user information from the area, we can present it to Vonage and the local ISP's and see if we can all figure it out.

It would have more backing to it if you were not the only two signatures on it...

UPDATE:

I installed a linksys wrt54gs and updated the firmware and am now using the QOS on my phone modem port. So far I am getting better call quality and not choppy, not PERFECT but it helps. I still think its a problem on their end and we need a way to direct them to this thread - otherwise they are going to tell us all the same thing, that its our isp or something stupid.

Not Choppy...It may never be perfect due to the fact that Voip and the internet have many variables....

Well DUH thats why Im trying to get more signatures on it, thats the whole point of it.

And yes I still get jitter. Voip may not be perfect but for the first 6 months I had it, it NEVER jitted, worse thing that happened was an echo.

So yeah I think something strange happend to something SOMEWHERE, thats why I'd like to figure out.

The reason I thought i was getting better quality is because the jitter is random, it doesnt happen on every call, the only true way I could think of to figure it out is to somehow track the packets on every call to see if there is a common path for the bad calls, but I'm not sure how to do that.

I don't know too much about this stuff, but I did find this cool tool called "ping plotter" ( www.pingplotter.com ) that will trace your packets as they find any web site. At least you can see the quallity of the different hops from your ISP as packets fly out into the hinter lands....
