PostPosted: Thu Jul 07, 2005 1:14 pm    Post subject: Choppy audio, even after broadband saver & latency check Reply with quote Back to top

Comcast broadband (3000kbps/380kbps) RCA model DCM315 cable modem, Linksys RT31P2 router, Apple Airport Extreme WAP (the Airport is behind the Linksys). I'm using broadband saver - normal quality.

My voice (upload) quality is terrible -- other person's voice is o.k.

I spent an hour on the phone with Vonage tech support yesterday. We eliminated RF interference, poor quality cables, and the phone as sources of the problem. My latency (when pinging Comcast.net) sometimes goes well over 200ms during peak hours, but the average latency is usually between 100ms and 150ms. I've been in contact with Comcast to see if anything can be done to improve.

However, when I test my Voip during off-peak hours, when the latency is much lower -- usually around 50ms -- the audio quality is still very poor.

Any word on a possible cause? Do I need a different router?

I've run 10 tests on testyourvoip.com (to the Boston server).
Highest score was 4.2, lowest was 3.2, median was 3.8, average was 3.76. My score appears to be near the median for all users in the past month in 1.) my zip code 80301 2.) users of Comcast.

According to that site, a median of 3.8 is described as being nearly "as good as a decent cell phone call".

However, if I had to characterize the quality of my upload voice, I'd describe it as somewhere between "Forget the phone, use Pony Express" and "Like tin cans and string". The choppyness of my voice (left on voicemail) is so bad I cannot understand my own message. Conversations on my cell phone are WAY better.

Is this the state of Voip? Doesn't seem like it's ready for prime time.

Nate, here are what mine looks like to compare...check your outgoing loss periods, etc...MUCH higher than the incoming.

is that the state of your internet connection? it's the factor that's not ready for prime time. you have a ton of loss as well as fairly high pings. you won't have a good Voip experience until its corrected. things to do are call comcast (rarely worthwhile), check your signal levels if your cable modem lets you, possibly try a new cable modem, especially from a place with a good return policy. many people have "cured" their problems with a new modem, but if not you can always take it back. the motorola surfboard 5100 is popular, but any newer modem should do.

Your max jitter is way high, and that is what is causing your problem. Your ISP has to fix this before you will get a good connection. Take it from someone who just switched ISPs. Was on wireless broadband that barely worked for Vonage, and now have a cable modem and sounds better than a land line.

Contacting Comcast was useless. They tested my modem (with a MAC address) and reported latency of ~50ms and no service problems. I told the CSR about testyourvoip.com and testmy.net but he was suspicious of the results, saying "who knows how many network hops are between you and them". Well, I checked: there are 16 network hops between me a testyourvoip. Only 11 network between me and Comcast. I'm not informed enough to counter his argument.

Is there any way to actually compare apples to apples regarding broadband and Voip?
