Here is what I found to be the closest to unlocking the device:
Quote:
'This is how I did a reset on my PAP2:
I opened the box to find a two pin jumper for three pins available on
the board. I kept the device ON, (I used NONSTATIC gloves) pluged off
the jumper from the second and the third pins and connected it to the
first and second pins. Then I punched in "****" and "FACTRESET" and
then "1" on the telephone connected to the PAP2. It announced that it
did RESET successfully. I then switched of the PAP2 and reverted the
jumper back to its second and third pin position and closed the box. I
had the PAP2 unlocked!
'

Others have reported that there is no jumper
see picture
http://offshoredrive.com/~lesha/imgp4129.jpg
but someone said U34 is the jumper (right -down in the above picture)

Could someone confirm or infirm this ? Did anyone have tried this ?

Wow...Best of luck with that.... Rolling Eyes
The problem will most likely revert back to the fact Vonage doesn't allow unlocked boxes on their network...So if they see the MAC address is the same but you "unlocked" it, then good luck also keeping your account active...

How many times are people going to complain about Vonage etc and locked adapters when there are other options out there that will easily allow them to BYOD etc...

Here is one reason for this unlock search:
- If you cancel before 12 moths of service then there is a $39.9 disconnect fee
- If you bought the adaptor from a retail store, they (Vonage) say return it to retail store
So if you already have (or more than) 12 months and you want to cancel:
- you can not return the adapter to the retail store ( who will take it back after 12 months ? )
- you will not return the adaptor to vonage because there is no disconnect fee to avoid, and it looks that they will not accept a retail adapter sent back to them
Now is not about people complain about Vonage & locked adapters it became what you will do with that adaptor ?
Would it be nice to be able to use it instead of throwing it away ? (could be regarded as throwing your money away)
Personally, even if I will not try anything (and use Vonage service for years to come), I would like to know that there is a way to unlock the PAP2. (and to know that way) or at least start with make the web interface accessible.
So forget about reasons and consequences, I would like to see that someone post a method to unlock the device! (Or give a solid explanation why it can't be done)

Easy.
You do what some other people are talking about and share your credentials with others, then there can be multiple users on an unlimited account. Of course Vonage would want to avoid that. Simple business practices will tell you that.

It is by choice you decided to buy it retail...To be able to expect to return it to Vonage is not a realistic expectation.

Also, like others have mentioned most people who really want an unlocked device will be tinkering with it, mess something up, call Vonage and waste the time of CS reps that could be helping someone else out, and then get livid that they had a long wait...
Here is a sample of a phonecall I had in another post of mine...

CS-What can I do for you?

Caller-I was messing around in the router/adapter/whatever, changed some things in there to see what it does, and now my Voip line doesn't work...you guys are horrible and I am reporting you to the FCC, FAA, BBB, and ABC!

CS-Sir/Maam, what settings did you change?

Caller-I don't remember, but it used to work, and doesn't now! You have deceptive practices for NOT locking me out so I could mess around with things I have no idea what they are! I want credit added to my account, credit me now!

CS-Do you have ANY idea what values/settings/ you tinkered with at all?

Caller-No, I am cancelling my account and getting a laywer to sue you for giving me enough access to be dangerous to my settings!

CS-(sigh)

PostPosted: Mon Jul 25, 2005 2:42 pm    Post subject: I have instructions on how to UNLOCK Linksys PAP2 Adapter Reply with quote Back to top

I have finally found the hard reason for Vonage not unlocking the PAP2 Cool
They are protecting their intellectual property!

Under the admin login you will find that the configuration will be downloaded from ls.tftp.vonage.net.

Of course you can as a customer use your account information and hack their system - causing them untold damages.

The simple fact that so many have done like me - read and read on the box in the store, thinking that we actually were buying a Linksys PAP2 adapter and not a Vonage Service seems to be completely beyond their interest.

I have 2 PAP2 devices, which I have bought for $60 each. I'm unlikely to fly across to the US to have the store take them back.....

I would be very willing to give Vonage a few $ to unlock my device, which they very easily could do by remotely removing all their custom configuration - leaving me no clue to what special things they have, like downloading configuration from ls.tftp.vonage.net.

In my case - and possibly many more, Vonage would in my mind change from being obnoxious to fair and just.

For their managed service I have all sympathy for keeping the devices completely centrally managed, but where is the logic of refusing to unlock in cases like mine - where they don't even provide a service in my country, or allowing use of the second port for a private service such as a local *asterisk server - could well be that you have to enter config details on your own account page and have Vonage pushing "your private" config for the second port down to your device - user gets full use and Vonage full control.....

Just my two pennies Wink

PS, I too as many more here have spent hours on the phone trying to get my device usable.... Hello vonage....

PPS, Vonage now unlock Cisco ATA 186 adapters on request, maybe I will be able to get mine unlocked in a couple of years, until that happens I will most likely call a few more times just 'cause I want to get the use of the adapters I bought at retail price, with the wording - No Contracts Lol

This could also cause a problem for you...

2.6 Use of Service and Device by Customers Outside the United States. Although we encourage you to use of the Service to place calls to foreign countries from within the United States, we do not presently offer or support the Service in any countries other than the United States and Canada. If you use the Service or the Device outside of the United States or Canada, you will be solely responsible for any violations of local laws and regulations resulting from such use. We reserve the right to terminate your Service immediately if we determine, in our sole and absolute discretion, that you have used the Service or the Device outside of the United States or Canada.

Why not realize you have adapters you most likely will not be able to use, sell the pap2's on ebay or something, recoup some of your money, and then move to someone different.

Hi Trowski - old friend,
all these bothersome Forum users are really taking a lot of your
time - don't they Wink

bla bla bla ... people actually have a concearn about the device
and you are still punching out §´s of user agreements -
these guys are not VONAGE Clients and don´t plan becoming ...
even less after having bought an expencive adatper
(sure, they did not get the rebate and US$ 60.- sure IS expencive
for something you can´t use ...now looking at Grandstream devices,
they do work smooth, not locked and are REALLY CHEAP and REALLY
PORTABLE, too ) - well so to say, these §´s don´t apply to them
- they didn´t agree to them or where´re the TERMS ... on the BOX, too ?????

Well - for all who think it's not correct to have a Locked PAP2,
just visit our most favorit topic in this regards

best regards

No one is a bother to me...I am just here to help when I can..

But I think you may find it bothersome that is issue won't change anytime soon. Again, there are so many providers out there that allow BYOD etc....Vonage is not forcing anyone to stay with their service, there is not a contract, etc...

Again, do I feel for you, yes I do...Will a class action lawsuit get you anywhere? Most likely not. Is it worth hiring a laywer? Only if you have enough money to waste on this just to stay with a provider you feel is deceptive etc? Hardly....
