I was informed by a Vonage representative that they do not and will not port a number out of Vonage. The reason given is that they do not obtain or release numbers to the NANPA but are the actual customer and have no legal obligation to port out. They indicate that they do port in. This strikes me as extremely hypocritical and anti-competitive. Should there be a disclaimer that if you obtain Vonage service, you are forever stuck with it if you want to keep your number? Thoughts?

Although I have had this number for 22 years I do beleive I could live without it and get a new telephone number. Does not concern me one bit.

I have read rumors that Vonage will port out a number if you ported the number in to begin with. I am not sure how true this is though.

You CAN port your number out of Vonage. you have to do a "Winback Procedure". However, Vonage does not play a part in the winback process. You have to go through the company you are porting to and you must keep your Vonage line active until the port is complete. Just as when you ported TO Vonage.

While I would not mind getting a new home phone or other non-business generating number, I use my number for business all the time. In that situation, just "living without" my number would not be an option. If I do not port in and obtain a number from Vonage, it appears I am stuck with them until I no longer need the telephone number for business. Again, this seems anti-competitive and no where in the fine print did I read that they can/will do this.

Not only can you port out the number that you ported in but you can port out a number that we assign to you as well.

If not please refer to my earlier post, which will explain in detail that

A Vonage rep also told me today that YES you can port out from Vonage.

Of course, I have no way to verify.

Hey everyone! I'm actually in the process of porting out a Vonage assigned number. I did exactly what rcb116 said about a month ago: I called up another carrier, asked for a number transfer, and kept my Vonage line up.

Unfortunately, the initial request was rejected on the basis that the name did not match the Vonage user name, which it of course did. So one rejection for no reason. The new company resubmitted the request again today. Maybe it was somebody's slip up and they hit the wrong button, I'll give the benefit of the doubt for now. Another rejection and it will definitely raise suspicions.
