PostPosted: Wed Jul 06, 2005 6:39 pm    Post subject: How to turn on QoS for VOIP on WRTP54G Reply with quote Back to top

Ok, so I did a little experimenting and was able to get QoS working properly on the WRTP54G with firmware 1.00.37

The earlier firmware's implementation of QoS was basically worthless, but now it works great! Prior to doing this, my outgoing voice quality would go down the tubes when I was uploading a big file. Now the router prioritizes the voice traffic and everything works great regardless of my internet activity.

1) Log onto the router control panel (http://192.168.15.1)

2) Go to the Applications and Gaming section and select the QoS sub-section.

3) Enter 5060 in one of the specific port # fields and select the high radio button. (VoIP uses port 5060 unless Vonage has changed your settings to use another port)

4) Click Save settings (important!)

5) Make a call while uploading a big file to see if it worked, it did for me!

No router restart is needed.

Sage continues: cannot resolve internet names after 1.00.37

Here's a good one. After lots of fun issues with the original firmware for the WRTP54G (v1.00.20) in getting upgraded to v1.00.29, I have a new problem with 1.00.37. To read about my .20 to .29 issues, go to http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=5967&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=20 and search for 2 postings by linksystodd.

After upgrading to .29, a few days later the 54G downloaded and applied .37. In doing so, it no longer allowed me to access the Internet from my web browser from a PC behind the 54G! I could make phone calls no problem. The PC even got an IP address from the 54G, including DNS information, etc., but all HTTP requests failed. In fact, all name resolution failed (and I think is the cause of my problem). However, I COULD ping specific Internet-side IP addresses (not names). I could also connect my PC directly to the cable modem and get access to the internet, so I've proven the 54G with .37 is the problem. Moreover, I downgraded to .29 (using the same instructions as UPgrading firmware) and it worked again. So .37 is definitely my problem.

I've asked Vonage to send me the image file for .37 and would try to uprade it myself. I'll see if I have any luck and will post an update. I would appreciate any suggestions or comiserations.

I have the same issue with name resolution. I just opened the properties for the network card on my PC and entered the DNS servers as found on the status page on the router.

I believe I checked my DNS settings against those of my router, and they were the same. I may be wrong. However, I'm downloading the new image via tftp and will try upgrading manually to see if anything changes. If I still have the problem, I will verify my DNS settings. I'll let you know!

Sure enough, Mbarb, once I set the DNS settings of my NIC on my PC to that of the router and it worked. However, this is a workaround, not a fix, that I hope Linksys fixes soon. The reason is that I've got a laptop that floats between many networks, and I prefer DHCP to assign the DNS settings. This is no problem for my desktops at home, but a real pain for me with my laptop.

So the problem is that the router cannot seem to pass address resolution requests back to my PCs. Through the ping test I can see it can resolve names, but just can't seem to communicate their addresses back to my PC (which thinks the router -- 192.168.15.1 -- is the DNS server).

Also, another problem I see is that the router will not report which DHCP leases it has given (via Status > Local Network > DHCP Clients Table).

Bottom line: still beta code, needs work. Maybe they should hand it over to sveasoft.com.

However, I downloaded without any tftp options. You might try -i, which forces a binary download. It may be defaulting to a text download, which loses the 8th bit from each byte. You command would be:

tftp -i tftp.vonage.net get wrt-11.1.0-r016-1.00.37-r050624.img

Let me know if that fixes the problem.

FYI, i was on the phone w/a tech this morning and he walked me through a manual firmware upgrade to 1.00.37(?). I was having an issue w/call waiting and this upgrade seemed to fix the problem.

i still have a problem w/outgoing caller id ....

Kudos and thanks to those that have contributed to this thread.

I can't believe I'm dealing with another of these linksys firmware problems. The problem I was trying to solve was the routers inability to forward DNS requests. Like some of the members above, I have 6 machines in the house, 3 being laptops that need to be mobile, setting fixed dns servers on all of them is less than ideal for me.

At any rate, I had a couple of questions.

I tried the tftp link specified above and I'm not sure if this is finishing correctly. The file size I have is 3.68MB (3,866,632 bytes). Is this correct?

The second problem is that I can no longer login as "user/tivonpw" the router responds with "Error: User not allowed to login this user level" this happened after I called tech support and they told me to reset it. I seemed to be able to login when it was new.

At this point they have told me to return this thing, I'm overly dissapointed in this piece of hardware and the level of suppor that they are able to offer. I'm not even sure if a new one will solve the problems, if I can't get the new one to upgrade, I will have to return that one as well.

Can this router be forced to tftp from a local machine?

Thanks in advance
