I have done to much as it is and of course I threw away my router box and can't return it. Vonage should never have used this router and put their name on it. Time to go try out [ADMIN EDIT]. I will post on here and let you know if the service is any better with their off shore company LOL. Oh, and now I have it set to instant forward to my cell until I get switched over to SunRocket.

joeschmoe -

Your decision. It is unfortunate, I agree, that the WRTP54G has problems as a router, especially in its handling (or lack thereof) of QoS - a problem wich CyberTAN/Linksys/Vonage could fix by simply allowing manual setup of the upstream bandwidth.

Having said that, NO Voip on this planet or any other is going to work for you unless you have a solid, working network. No matter who you go with, you will need a solid router.

I run Voip, multiple VPN's, and BitTorrent on a 256k upstream limited connection. My Vonage calls are crystal clear. If you want assistance getting your network set up properly, regardless of your choice of Voip providers, there are people here (myself included) who can help. Another good resource is www.linksysinfo.org if you are interested in the Linksys line of routers - excellent information and tips there.

Mine seems quirky. At times my web browsing is slow at times it is fine. I am tempted to get a wireless router from Compusa and return the WRTP54G back to Vonage for a RTP300.

In my case, I simply purchased a WRT54G (now known as the WRT54GL, the WRT54G has changed hardware since), and loaded aftermarket firmware known as HyperWRT Tofu on it. My network has run like a top since I made this move.

The WRTP54G is still sitting there, acting as a quite excellent Vonage device, with the wireless turned off and not really doing any sort of data routing, sitting safely and quietly behind my WRT54G. In other words, it's a Vonage device with a lot of extra fancy blinky bits that never actually get used. Wink

The WRTP54G and RTP300 are exactly the same router, with the sole addition of wireless to the WRTP54G. I wouldn't actually run a heavily used network on either of them, so you aren't going to help anything by going to a RTP300, unless you are looking to just save the cost difference between the WRTP54G and the RTP300.

And, heck, the WRTP54G does work, as long as you don't run BitTorrent on it or expect fully functional QoS. So it's a nice box to have around in case your main router fries or has major problems, at the very least.

I have just started using BitTorrent, and don't have any experience with it on a network other than my WRTP54G. But I have to say it seems to work fine. If I set upload speed to 50K then I get 50K (according to the BitTorrent display). If I set it to 30K then I get 30K. I never set any higher than 50K since I don't want to tie up too much bandwidth.
What sort of BitTorrent issues have you seen?

turbo53 -

Before the WRTP54G got upgraded to the 1.00.5x firmware, I had very few issues with it. However, as soon as the 5x series started up, or maybe slightly before, I ran into a problem that plagues many consumer routers.

The connections table on the WRTP54G is (I'm guessing) the standard consumer router default of 2,480 available active connections. Many consumer routers set a very long default before timing out active but idle Internet connections. In the case of the Linksys series, that default is 5 days.

As you probably are aware, P2P is all about making GOBS of connections. Generally, FAR more than 2,048 in any given 5-day period. So what happens is the "iptables" connections table fills up, and the router is unable to make any new connections. Existing connections continue to work, but you can't surf to any new web sites, etc, and you have to restart the router to make it work.

You CAN, to an extent, get around this problem by telling P2P to only keep a small handful of connections open at once. But even then, it's iffy. P2P just wants to fill up that iptables.

The other issue is the way the wRTP54G and RTP300 handle QoS. They seemingly are unable to accurately calculate the available upstream bandwidth, and therefore cannot shape traffic properly.

OK. My experience thus far has just been to download one or two files and then shut down Bittorrent. I guess this wouldn't show the type of behavior you are describing.
