PostPosted: Mon Jul 04, 2005 2:02 pm    Post subject: Which Unit Comes In The Box Sent From Vonage... Reply with quote Back to top

just signed up for Vonage. what i want to know is which linksys model comes in the box? is it the newer color WRTP54G or the RT31P2? i would rather have the WRTP model over the RT model. i can go to compusa and pick up the WRTP model now. if i do that, do i need to cancel the shipment from Vonage? i didnt see that i was bein charged for the phone adapter from Vonage so do i just return it or just not worry about it? i hope im making sense... thanks for any response.

there have been a ton of posts on the wrtp and its problems, so don't say you weren't warned. a wrt54g in front of a rt31p2 is probably a better idea, but to each his own.
you can go buy the wrtp but you'll have to call and change the mac address on the account that was already created for you. the rebates will not apply either. or you can cancel your new account and start another one with the wrtp at vonage.com/activate. I could be wrong, but I don't think you'll get the rebates anyway, until 90 days after your account was canceled.

hmm.. so the wrtp is just a pretty face with nothing under the hood? ive seen posts go both ways with the wrtp.. folks with the later firmware have had better results that with original firmware..

i can get the wrtp for free if i go thru compusa.. after rebates of course..

welp let me use the search button again and smoke over some more posts... thanks for the insight.

It is my understanding that you will only get the rebates if you sign up for a new account when you buy the router. If you have already signed up and you receive an RT31P2 you will not be eligible for the rebate. You might be able to cancel the account that you just signed up for and then open a new account when you purchase the WRTP54G. However, I would have to agree with reebok and also suggest that you purchase a WRT54G and put the RT31P2 that you receive behind that.

As a recent WRTP54G owner myself, I must agree with the above warnings--I strongly advise you not to purchase this product, there are just still too many issues for too many people, at least at this stage of Linksys's beta testing. And I count myself relatively lucky, having not suffered (so far, at least) a lot of the more serious problems that others have. Still, I'm quite irritated that this router can't even properly prioritize voice over data traffic. While I can manually throttle down any upload traffic when I need to make a phone call, it defeats the whole purpose of having the Voip adapter integrated with the router.

The WRTP has a common issue downloading the firmware from Vonage when initially being installed. Thisll generally cause the phone adapter to function but any routing ability from the built in router wont work without a proper installation. This can be fixed rather easily if you know how to install firmware and can find the most recent version.

There has also been an interesting fix where you disable the wireless portion of the router, restart it and it downloads the firmware. Then you can reinable it after it gets remotely updated. You can tell its downloading/installing the firmware when the powerlight blinks rapidly for about 5-7 min after boot up.

Technical support (the US tier2 technical support) can help guide you through this.
