PostPosted: Mon Jul 04, 2005 12:12 pm    Post subject: 2 seperate accounts on one PAP2 device allowed? Reply with quote Back to top

I currently own a Linksys PAP2 device which allows for 2 phone lines. I only use one of them at the moment. I use my first Vonage line for my home office (account in my name) and the second one on the Linksys device is currently not activated. I would now like to port over the land line phone line in my home but the account is in the name of my spouse (different last name) who would also like to use Vonage as our home line.

Does Vonage allow 2 phone lines on one PAP2 device each with a separate account name and payment responsibility? From searching online I can’t really find the answer and I’m hesitant to call support and wait on hold only to get some inexperienced level 1 tech who may not know the correct answer.

Alternatively should I consider purchasing a second PAP2 device if that is the only way to make this work? Would there be any downside or conflict in my setup if I was running 2 of these Linksys devices off of the same router? I have sufficient bandwidth to support multiple lines or at least so the measurement tool tells me that I’m safe for up to 8 lines.

I would appreciate any experiences anyone may have had with this type of issue where I need 2 phone lines in my home but each one must be in a separate account name. Can I do this on one device or do I need 2?

Vonage Registers the MAC addresses of your phone adapters to individual accounts. MAC addresses are like fingerprints for network hardware. I can tell you with almost complete certainty that ONE mac addr on TWO accts would cause issues.

Running multiple devices off of a router (especially the PAP2s) is a very common setup, and having one per acct as the main device is probably your safest and simplist option. I believe the PAP2s are also the cheapest of all the Vonage phone adapters. You can even activate the new PAP2 yourself once u get it from the store and add it onto your existing account.

As I'm out of ports on my current Netgear WGR614 router I was thinking of buying the Linksys RT31P2 which has multiple ethernet ports. I was going to connect the newly purchased RT31P2 directly to my DSL modem and then attach my current Pap2 and Netgear router to the RT31P2.

Off of the Netgear router I would then plug in my my 2 home computers an other associated ethernet devices such as my backup drive.

1- RT31P2 connected direclty to DSL Modem.
2- Seperate account Pap2 connected to RT31P2.
3- Netgear router connected to RT31P2.
4- All home computing devices connected to Netgear router.

Can anyone let me know if this might cause any problems from what they have seen? Would you do anything differently if you were running out of Ethernet ports and needed to add another Vonage device to get another phone line in a different account name? I'm trying to control my hardware investment but still have the best quality of service with 2 Vonage devices.

Thanks for your feedback.

While you could try that, I have a suspicion that it won't work. I THINK the RT31P2 will intercept ports that are needed by the PAP2. I could be wrong though. I was thinking that you may have better luck putting both phone adapters behind the WGR614. Since I don't have actual experience in that matter, take this with a grain of salt.
