OK - so we ordered Vonage back in February and immediately requested a local number transfer. We're now coming up on 5 months and of course - we have been through the phone calls and e-mails but no progress ever seems to be made. Should we cancel the transfer and reorder it with the online form??

First, in order for LNP to work properly you have to remove all ancillary services from your wire line telephone service. This includes DSL.
Next, on business day 21 of your LNP request if the number hasn't yet been ported, call your public utilities commission and file a complaint against your incumbent carrier for refusing to perform a legally obligated number transfer.
In less than a week your number will transfer. It's magical. In the twisted world of telecom regulation the most feared agency isn't the FCC but state public utility commissions. |

After month 3, I tried the PUC - but the official response from the Colorado PUC is that Voip is not covered by them... It is an unregulated service that they have no control over.
So, here we sit at month 5. |

This is how you get a PUC to take your side:
Be absolutely clear that the problem is with a regulated carrier transferring a number to another carrier. Mention to them that Vonage uses PaeTec and Focal switches to carry it's services so the LNP is actually regulated to regulated.
That's how I got my state PUC to go after Verizon. Lots of the PUC staff don't understand how Voip actually works. Educating them helps smooth things out.
In essence, Voip is just a last mile technology. Your ATA connects to a PaeTec or Focal switch to complete calls to the PSTN.
Vonage simply took advantage of the fact that modern telephone switches are not only good at carrying voice or POTS service, they also have huge amounts of untapped data communcation capabilities.
So educate the dolts at the PUC. You just might make it easier since now Quest (Aka US Worst) is on notice that foot dragging will attract the attention of local regulatory agencies. |
