I used a packet sniffer while using Vonage just to see the ports and tracffic and to see what data is sent and received,I'm not sure If I should be concerned but looking at the data sent and received, the phone numbers are sent in clear text.
I've search thru out this entire forum and theres no mention in this matter,I have a few question to anyone that may have knowledge in this particular area.
1. What protocal is used with Vonage Voip? So i can look up the resource on it. 2. Is Vonage using encryption? I dont think so but I'm not sure... 3. How easy is it to decode the audio data with a packet sniffer? 4. Is it possible to use a third party VPN or tunneling service like Anonymizer.com with Vonage to atleast encrypt between you and the vpn service?
Sorry If I sound paranoid lol but I think these are valid questions and concernes.
Any help in these matter is appreciated and if you know of a site that has good and education info on this would be great. |

Ok I've done some research and its very dificult to decode the audio data ..not impossible but very dificult.
LOL I'm not concerned anymore, its easier to tap into a Telco line than decoding Vonage audio streams, according to the research i''ve done.

It might be easier to tap into a telco line, but that takes a physical presence to do. With Voip, a hacker from Antartica can go trolling for phone conversations. It's worse than when people used scanners to listen on analog cell conversations.
The other issue you found is worrisome too, that the phone #'s are sent unencrypted. |
