PostPosted: Sun Jul 03, 2005 8:17 pm    Post subject: Using Linksys as Phone Adapter Only on Wireless -Question! Reply with quote Back to top

I love this forum. Just reading it today I figured out how to connect my Vonage service and it works like a charm.

I have Comcast internet using their Netgear wireless modem/router so I did not want the Vonage-supplied Linksys RT31P2 to act as a router - only as a phone adapter.

For any newbies, I would not even read the set-up instructions that came with the Vonage equipment. Just search this forum.

I first tried to call Vonage and ask if i could get the vTech ip8100 because it looks to be more advanced and includes wireless phones, etc. They said they do not have them. Nor does Best Buy, Comp USA, Cricuit City, etc.

Then after reading this forum, I did the following:
-- turned off my laptop
-- plugged a cable from internet on the RT31P2 to Lan 1 on the Netgear modem/router. (Never turned off the Netgear).
-- plugged Lan 4 from Netgear to laptop
-- plugged in the RT31P2
-- waited 2 -3 minutes
-- Phone 1 lights up
-- plugged in phone to RT31P2 and viola! It works great!

My wireless internet connection still works as well. And the wired when I want more speed.

I then disconnected the feed line from the phone company into the phone box; plugged in the RT31P2 to a wall phone jack; went into the kitchen and plugged in a phone and it works! Works in the bedroom as well.

This is great stuff. Thanks to this Forum.

Now I have a problem. The RT31P2 is in my office. My fax is there as well. I only have one phone jack in the office which is now connected to the RT31P2. How can I plug my fax line in?

OK, I think I figured this out - if I add a fax number to my Vonage account and simply plug the fax into the Phone 2 of the RT31P2, I'm in business right.? Does that sound correct?

Will the fact that i am using the RT31P2 as only a phone adapter interfere with the fax ordering and set-up process? The reason I ask is when I try to order a fax line, the MAC address is displayed on the order.

If you don't need a dedicated line for you fax, I don't see why a phone splitter/adapter wouldn't work. Just plug in a 1-to-2 adapter at the back of your router/ata and then plug one cord into the wall jack and the other to the fax. An Adapter only costs $5-6 from RadioShack.

Maybe the Vonage system doesn't handle faxes well in that setup.
