Hello all,

I'm looking to incorporate "whole home" access to my Vonage system. I'm aware of disconnecting the phone company's signal and replacing it with Vonage's, but I'm not willing to drop my regular home line (my Vonage is my business line). I'm currently preparing my home for some structured wiring and was wondering if I can use a telephone line distribution patch panel to split my Vonage signal to 3 or 4 outlets that I'll be installing soon. Has anyone ever done this? I can wire just about anything, but my knowledge of telecom isn't quite where it should be, I suppose Very Happy

Thanks for any comments in advance!

Yes, typically with a structured wiring situation you can not only send both signals to every jack but you can choose for each jack which number should be on line 1 and which number should be on line 2 by simply patching the appropriately colored pairs to the source in the structured wiring panel.

The advantage of this is that you can take a simple 2 line splitter and put it in a separate room if you want to temporarily receive the line 2 calls without rewiring.

If you do this you may want to write on the jacks which number is line 1 so that you aren't opening up the wiring panel and checking when you move a phone. It helps to keep a diagram inside the panel as well. I also recommend that you do all of your configuration in the panel and wire all of your jacks per standard color configurations. You will end up with fewer headaches in the future even though it may seem simpler to simply rewire the jack. In a non-structured environment rewiring the jack is often the only choice.

You basically just hook up a bunch of phones in parallel with the Vonage box. There's not much to it.

Thanks for the quick replies,

I guess I wasn't sure if the Vonage signal could be treated as a normal phone signal, but it seems it certainly can (which makes alot of sense), so I feel more at ease now.

Cheers,

POTS or Plain Old Telephone System works in the event of power failure but the majority of multiple line phones do not support lines 2,3,4 when the power goes out so you it would be in your best interest to keep line 1 as is for that reason.

There are some phones on the market (Venture) that allow you to have an intercom between different sets if line 1 is common at each location you use this model of phone. For this reason you may want to keep line one identical at each location.

If you are replacing jacks, spend the extra dollar and get one with 2 or 3 outlets
If you have 8 wires running to each you will be prepared if you wire the 3rd and 4th pair when you expand your telephone system.

Older homes/apartments usually only have 4 wires (2 pairs) so that might not be a concern
