/23/2005: LNP transfer completed - flawlessly. Existing POTS line when picking up receiving rings once and an automated message states repetitively: 'This is a dedicated data only line. Calls may not be placed or received'. Incoming calls ring on correct #.

Kesco, I am not clearly understanding the process here. After you complete your LNP, if a person were to call you at your old number, the call would come through vonage...right?

who will hear the message 'This is a dedicated Data only line. Calls may not be placed or received' ? Is that you when you pick up the phone line? I am pretty sure callers will not hear that message, just want to double check

Ok, kesko, I've been following the same steps that you outlined in your original post. I just e-mailed the Vonage transfer dept telling them that I was eligible for dry loop with announcement or naked DSL. I was hoping to get a reply that the request was processing, as you got on 6/7/2005. But when they responded they said that they required a confirmation number that I'm supposed to get from Verizon confirming that my DSL service had been removed from the line.

Did you get a similar note from Vonage? Or maybe they are handling these requests differently now?

I'm having the same problem on porting a Verizon line in Maryland (DC Metro area). What area are you trying to port in? It should be the same in all Verizon areas, but not sure. The original poster was in NYC metro.

Vonage's latest response:

"We Can't transfer your phone number with DSL feature and for transfer you have to remove the feature."

Grrr...

I'm in southeastern Pennsylvania - suburban Philadelphia. We are in the former Bell Atlantic area, zoookapi, while kesco is not. I'm not sure if that matters (it shouldn't).

That's kind of what I was getting at. It's been soo long since they merged but you never know what stuff is still around and different in NYNEX vs Bell Atlanta area.

I'm taking a new approach in switching the DSL over to fiber since it's actually cheaper per month and I think it should be easier to separate the internet from the phone line then too. Vonage can't say I have DSL then. I'm going to email Vonage to see if this switch away from DSL will get things moving as I'm essentially cancelling the DSL.

ok, i'm trying to do what the OP did, here in maryland. now i'm stuck, though-
Vonage says they wont do the transfer until i get them a confirmation number that dsl is being removed from my line.
verizon encore says dry loop is available at my location, but my dsl would be disconnected for at least two weeks during the process and i would lose my current number.

ideas? i guess i could get another line and try to move the dsl to that, but i'm trying to avoid putting too much more money and time into this...

singe606, I got the same thing - a message from Vonage saying they needed a confirmation number from Verizon (see my Sep. 4 post). I was not hopeful that Verizon would give me one. And, of course, you don't want the DSL service removed to start with, which is what the confirmation number would be for.

I spent a few weeks wondering if I would hear from Verizon, but not hearing from them, and mulling over what I should do. Then I just decided to reply to Vonage saying
- I had not received a confirmation number from Verizon.
- I was frankly not expecting to receive one, or for Verizon to be cooperative in any way in my effort, or for their phone associates to even know anything about the process were I to call and ask.
- Nonetheless, I knew that the local phone number request was possible.
- Couldn't they just put the transfer through? And that I really wanted to be a Vonage customer.

I got a reply from Vonage almost immediately stating "We have received your updated information for your number transfer request. Thank you for supplying the necessary information."

Then about 2 weeks later I received confirmation that my LNP request had been approved and would be completed in about 3 days. I had my doubts up to the very end as to whether the process would work, but now I'm up and running (finally) with naked DSL.

You have to be patient! Below is the timeline I ended up having. Good luck!

9/1 - Changed payment method on Verizon account to paper-free (credit card) billing.

9/1 - Signed up for Vonage service online, including local number portability (LNP) request.

9/1 - Received e-mail confirmations from Vonage (one for credit card processing, one for 911 activation).

9/2 - Received e-mail from Vonage stating that I needed to complete a letter of agency (LOA) for the transfer online. Completed the LOA online.

9/3 - Received e-mail from Vonage stating that "there are issue(s) with your number that are preventing the transfer to Vonage" (namely, that DSL was currently associated with my number).

9/3 - Replied that my area was eligible for 'dry loop with announcement' or 'naked DSL.'

9/3 - Received another e-mail from Vonage stating that I still needed to obtain a confirmation number from Verizon.

9/19 - I wrote back asking them to try it anyway (as detailed above).

9/19 - E-mail thanking me for providing updated information (which I hadn't) and confirming that they were moving forward with my number transfer.

10/4 - E-mail received confirming that LNP request had been approved by Verizon and that the transfer would take place 10/7.

10/7 - Transfer completed as scheduled. Now when I plug a phone directly into my phone jack, I hear an announcement that this is a dedicated data-only line and calls cannot be placed.

Hello! Do I have to call up Vonage and tell them to request dry loop for me? Would Verizon automatically request "dry loop" if I Vonage forgets to request it? Does Verizon automatically raise the price $5/month or do I have to call after the port is successful?

Also, do I have to call and cancel my existing local phone service?

Finally, do you know if it is possible to port my existing number back to Verizon from Vonage if I am not satisfied? Thanks again.

sorry for the broken rambling, but here's what happened with me...
Put in a request with Verizon for a new line, actually as a new account because verizon cs reps said that would help avoid 'billing issues'
Waited a week for them to even acknowledge my order
Waiting another 2 weeks for Verizon to actually install the line
Put in a request to move my DSL service from the first number to the second
Waited another few weeks until the scheduled move date
2 days before the move was to take place they canceled the order because they said upon further review, my new line (at the same location) was not eligible for DSL
Meanwhile, the number actually successfully transferred to Vonage, even with DSL on the line!
The day of the transfer, there was no dialtone on the orginal line but DSL was still active, and all incoming calls to the number went to the Vonage phones - so I know it was technically possible for me to have a dry line
The next day the DSL was shut off too
Called verizon a couple of times, they had no idea why the DSL wouldnt be transferred, they called the engineers, they said the loop might be too long or something. Suggested I place another order- it "might go through this time" : 2 hours on the phone to tell me this
Since I didnt want to wait another month f'ing around with verizon just to be told they can't help me, i decided to get cable modem service with my local provider, Adelphia. I decided I pay too much to verizon each month for them to treat me like this. In fact, the whole reason I chose to go with Vonage in the first place is due a recurring issue of horrible line noise with our Verizon line. Sure, they would come out and fix it every time (after waiting a few weeks of course) but it would just happen again a few months later.

So, I bought the cable modem at CC on Friday and was online that following Monday. Everything is working just fine.

The lesson is: don't bother trying to work with Verizon to port your number and keep your DSL, it probably won't work and you'll have wasted your money and time.
