Post subject: Grandpa newbie-wrt54gs>rt31p2
I have been browsing this forum for a few days and I am quite
impressed by the technical knowledge contained within. I set
up my
Vonage
system 2 days ago with a 31p2 in front of an SMC
2804WBR and finally got it to work.
Tuesday I will be receiving a wrt54gs that I will replace the SMC
with. I would prefer to place the rt54 before the p2 but I would really
like your opinion on which is better, before or after?
If I'm not asking too much I would greatly appreciate instructions
on changes that need to be made to each router to get them to
work for each method. I will have 1 pc that connects directly and
2 that connect wirelessly via linksys cards.

wrt54gs-->rt31p2
wrt54gs got better qos so it should be the one directly connected to your modem. where do you plan to connect the wired computers? I would suggest to connect it to the wrt54gs. connect 1 lan port of wrt to the internet port of the rt

The wired will go to the wrt54. What do I have to change in
the 31p2 when I sign on to it? As I understand it, I should
hook up my computer to it first to change some values.

if you want to plug a computer into the rt31p2 and access its web settings at
http://192.168.15.1
you can set it up for remote administration which will let you access that web admin page from your computers when they are hooked up to the wrt. otherwise you won't be able to access that page unless you hook a computer directly to the rt31p2 every time. otherwise it should basically be plug n play.
