Your solution is interesting. But, why not just set your Simulring to ring both yoru cell phone and your Vonage line. That way, when you go out, you do not even have to worry about turning off your modem.

I have been down this road Jack. If the cell phone is turned off, then the cell voice mail picks up before the Vonage line even rings. Took a while to figure it out.
The "one button" configuration I came up with is I set my call forward option on my Vonage line to forward after 25 seconds (0f ringing my Vonage number.) Then the call forwards to my Cell number.
Now, If I want call forwarding active, I shut off my home answering machine (on the Vonage number) The machine does not pick up, so the call gets forwarded to my cell number. If the home answering machine is on, then if we don't answer, the machine does.
For this to work, you need to use an answering machine, vs. the Vonage voice mail. I actually prefer the machine, as we walk in the door, look at it, know if we have any and how many messages, and hit 1 button to listen to them. Also am able to check it remotely as easy as any other VM system!
Maybe this idea will work for some others! |

I found that if I turn off my broadband modem (Motorola has an Off button at the top of the modem) my calls will automatically forward to my cell phone because I selected in the Vonage program that if the network fails calls will forward to XXX. Now instead of activating call forwarding each time I leave the house thru the web interface, I just turn off the modem, and turn it back on when I get home. |
One thing to consider - the time it takes for the network availability number to start working. It seems to be pretty quick in my experience but from the FAQ:
"Why is there a lag for the Network Availability number before it starts working?
It may take time for our server to update the change. This usually does not exceed a four-hour maximum. If it takes longer than four hours for the Network Availability feature to start working, please contact Customer Care."
