PostPosted: Thu Jun 30, 2005 5:05 pm    Post subject: SB5100 modem with bad ethernet port Reply with quote Back to top

Lightning wiped out my crap Linksys Befsr41 router and the ethernet port on my Motorola Sb5100 modem.

The USB port on the modem works great however.

I'm racking my brain trying to figure out how I can get my Vonage up again (PAP2) without buying a new modem and router....but I keep running into a dead end.

Any ideas?

Is there any way of interfacing the PAP2 to an ethernet card in the computer?

Thanks

yes if you have two nic's on a computer then connect the Vonage device to the computer and enable ics, it should work. of course that's a big pain, etc etc, but it's your call.

Rather, you only need one NIC (to connect to the LAN). The USB cable modem itself is a virtual NIC.

You could turn off the router stuff on your existing router, and use its LAN ports as a switch.

Ok great, I'll try it.

Make sure power is off on router....so this is just a passive connection between the 4 LAN ports, I assume? (The diagnostic led won't go off, I hope it was just the wan port that was zapped.....and hope the PAP2 survived).

And of course the computer would have to be on if I wanted the Vonage to work. right?

Are there ANY performance issues with it like this?

Not having any luck.

The hardware is setup as follows...
SB5100 USB to PC USB (internet works fine)
Ethernet card to router lan port 1
Lan port 2 to PAP2

Router is not powered.

Keep getting network cable is unplugged and I know the card and cable are good.

All PAP2 lights come on after power down/power up but extinguish
right away and power led just flashes forever.

So, let me ask, if I go an buy a new modem (sb5100) and I use the usb port for internet....can I use the ethernet port to go directly to the PAP2....or do I have to buy another friggin router?

not unless your isp is givning you two ip's, and even then I'm not sure how the modem would handle that.
at any rate, why aren't you plugging the computer nic into the wan/internet port? don't use the lan port.

You said "Router Is not powered"... when I said to turn off the router, I meant to go into the settings and disable the DHCP and NAT and stuff. You still need to plug it in!

Also, you need to turn on the Internet sharing for your cable modem, in Windows.

I appreciate the help but if I knew what I was doing....I wouldn't ask for your help.

John....in my first post, I said the router is shot and I assume it's the WAN port....the diagnostic led won't turn off.

Paul...."go into settings"..... "turn on internet sharing" in windows?

You're telling me 95%

The other 5% is "how do I do that?

Thanks kindly for your help but I need specific instructions.
