Ok....I have dial tone but can't call.

Network properties show a couple of dozen settings for internet sharing.

Which one(s) do I enable?

As far as router setup....I don't have a clue....it's a peripheral device so it's not going to show up on the computer in device manager or anything.

This is usually how you get to the router settings. First, plug the computer into a LAN port on the router. From now on, you're not going to be using the router's WAN port at all anymore.

Go to Start->Run->cmd, and at the command line, type ipconfig

There should be an IP address after "Default Gateway" beginning with 192.168. Type that address into a browser, and you should end up at your router's config page.

The most important thing to do is disable the local DHCP server on the router. Once internet sharing is turned on in Windows, it will provide its own DHCP server, and you don't want them to fight.

Now look for a page on the router where you can change its local LAN IP address. Change it to 192.168.0.2. Windows Internet Sharing will use 192.168.0.1, so it makes sense to give your router the next number.

Next, assuming you have Windows XP, go to the "Network Connections" screen. Right-click on your cable modem in there, and go to properties. There should be a tab where you can check a box to "share this connection". You might as well restart after enabling sharing, for good measure.

After that, power-cycle the PAP2 and hope for the best. Post back with whether it works or not.

No matter what I do I can't access the router setup page.

It's finally working though....here's what I did....

I had to manually put the 192.168.*.* address in IP properties for the ethernet card and only then did it show that it was connected and sharing the modem. All of this time I was either doing a power up/down on the router or trying to obtain IP automatically.......which it would do....but showed an address in ipconfig that was totally bizzare.....(169.254.*.*)

I still though, can't type in the IP on my browser without it saying access denied....so I'm unable to look at the DHCP stuff you mentioned.

I can call out and receive fine now but it's been 15 minutes and the blue power led is still blinking.

I thought after it negotiates, it becomes a steady blue.

I'll just have to keep the computer on to use the phone for the time being.......do you see any potential problems with not getting into the router setup?

What's the brand/model of the router? Did you skip over any password screens? Most routers have a default password.

If you don't disable DHCP on the router, then there's a chance the PAP2 might sometimes obtain its IP from the router instead of the computer. That would most likely prevent it from getting online.

169.254.*.* is a dummy address assigned by Windows when it can't find an IP address otherwise.

A Linksys BEFSR41 4port.

I can't bring up the router setup page (http://192.168.1.1), so I can't do a password or anything.

It just always says "connection refused".

Are you sure I can do this through the LAN port? According to the manual it says modem connection will only work through the WAN port.

The phone is working fine.....power led is still flashing.

I'm certain that you don't need the WAN port.

If you temporarily put in 192.168.1.2 as your computer's IP, you'll probably be able to open http://192.168.1.1/

Just right-click on your LAN connection, go to properties, click TCP/IP, and go to properties.

Use 192.168.1.2 as the IP, and 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask. Gateway and DNS don't matter here.

Let me know if you can access 192.168.1.1 after doing that.
