I would like to switch from Verizon to Vonage but have concerns. Next month I will be switching from dial up to Wild Blue satellite for my internet connection. I need to know if Vonage and Wild Blue will be compatible. Also, I use a laptop computer exclusively to sell hunting and fishing licenses for Texas Parks & Wildlife. I need to know, before switching, if I will be able to use the laptop computer to run this program or if I will need additional equipment. I have purchased a Linksys WTR54-G router and a Linksys Wireless-G notebook adapter in readiness for the Wild Blue installation. Thank you for any help with this.

After review of the website it appears that the download/upload of even the cheapest plan would be fine for one or two Vonage lines. The only concern I would have is the lagtime of the satellite internet connection. I have not seen alot of replies about satellite internet. Only thing I could suggest is to try Vonage for a month and see how it goes before you ditch your landline phone.

some people have problems with Voip over satellite, some don't. there's a 14 day trial, so you can test it out before completely switching over. for a quick idea, you can try pinging various sites to see what kind of latency you're getting. if it's anywhere in the high 100's or above, I would say there's not a good chance of Voip working well for you.

One small issue, if you get FAPed your phone service will be dead:

Quote:
If at any time during a calendar month your Actual Usage is above the monthly Usage Threshold, we will reduce your WildBlue access speeds, typically to 128 kbps in the downstream (from the Internet to you) and 28 kbps in the upstream (from you to the Internet), for the remainder of the calendar month. At the beginning of the next calendar month, you will be restored to your original speed levels.

Wild Blue's FAP including usage limits

This would effect you if you do a lot of file sharing. If my math is correct you could not come close to exceeding the limits by merely talking on the phone. I think you could even stop filesharing at the 80% level when they send you a warning and still be OK on phone service.

I was going to suggest finding someone to run a Voip test, but since the service is not available yet I guess that isn't going to happen.

I also found this gem in their AUP:

Quote:
(x) connect multiple computers behind the cable modem to set up a LAN (Local Area Network) that in any manner would result in a violation of the terms of this Policy or an applicable Service plan;

a) I wonder who they stole this AUP from?
b) I honestly can't tell you what that means, "you can't do it if it violates the terms of this policy". That is like writing a law that says breaking laws is illegal.

Anyway, when you do get this up and running please post here so that when other people come asking the same question we have a better answer for them.

Once you get your service running you may also want to run the speed test here and the test at testyourvoip.com and post the results.

Found this on dslreports.....

Your right about the Latency, even though they expressed they have new Technology that reduces Latency, but could affect Voip.

What is the impact of latency? Can I play real-time Internet games or make Internet phone calls on your service?

The wildblue system is engineered to help offset the impact of latency. However, there is a delay of about a quarter second as the signal travels up to the satellite and back down to the ground. For most Internet applications this latency does not affect performance, however, there are some applications like voice over IP, or real-time interactive gaming, where latency will have a noticeable effect on performance over the wildblue network.

I would be interested to see is it works acceptably, but I would keep in mind the 14 day trial just in case.

As a satellite user (Direcway) and frequent contributor to threads on WildBlue in a lot of places, I have used that quote many times to demonstrate the willingness of WildBlue to "oversell" their product with true, but highly misleading statements.

Latency is a round trip. you cannot do anything with a one way trip "up to the satellite and back down to the ground." Some moderately complicated trig will demonstrate that, at the speed of light, the closest point in the US to the Anik F2 satellite (southern Texas) will have 505ms of speed-of-light travel. Double the "about a quarter second" quote. No amount of "new Technology" will repeal that speed limit. All other points in the US and Canada will have progressively longer s-o-l delays. Now that WildBlue is actually installing, we are seeing real-world reports on latency, and it is running 600ms to 1000ms typical.

That is in line with what I see on my higher-end Direcway account, and is certainly usable with Vonage if they don't degrade as the user base enlarges. Consumer Direcway has highly variable latency between 700ms and 2000ms, which leads to much more Voip frustration.

I just thought I would add that as far as wildblue's FAP is conserned even with the slowest package you would have to download 333Mb. per day for 30 days or upload 100 Mb per day for 30 days to breach their FAP. I am a former direcway customer and so I have done my homework on these systems. Also to the rocket scientist you really should mention the problems with latency that interferance and such causes and also the fact that wildblue's radio band is what is called a spot beam which minimizes the latency as well thus the fact that your latency is vastly improved over the dying direcway. You are correct in stating that that signal will only travel so fast and thats all she wrote and with that distance there will always be a bit of latency problems but not so much that it makes real trouble for anyone.
I have yet to get wildblue but I would love to hear ahead of time how it is doing with gaming as well, thanx.

The latency on any Satellite ISP makes it not useful for Voip. Period. End of story. Unless you are really really desperate and have no other way to get telephone service, this is not a recommend course of action
