did you see the one from today that was from 2/10/05? seems to be happening pretty often lately. but then again, is a relevant post to an old thread better than a new thread? depends on the thread I guess, but I thought this one was appropriate. at least people are searching.

wow, I wouldn't be that adamant about it, especially with the several positive reviews of satellite on this forum. generally? yes. period end of story I know all don't even ask? apparently not.

John, when you figure out how to bend physics and make a signal travel between an orbiting satellite and the earth go faster, please let us know. We'll dig up Albert Einstein; he's going to wanna hear this. Smile

Reebok is 100% correct. Have been people who have been able to make it work...

Yup; me too. I did not imply that it would not work. I said that the latency would be nearly intolerable and that a person should not use this as their primary phone line unless forced to do so. One brand name of satellite ISP versus another cannot change this fact. I wish it were not so, I really do.

Wow, this is blowing the dust off an old thread.

Yep! Since my post was last in the old thread I should add that Vonage and Direcway stopped working well together around August. Since Vonage does indeed work better with other satellite systems it appears to be a Direcway problem.

To Braylean: In reviving this one you seem to have fixated on FAP. Are you aware that your beloved WildBlue is steadily lowering it? You started with 10MB per calendar month. Effective 12/1 it was changed to 10MB per rolling 30 days. Effective 1/1/06 it was changed to 7500MB per rolling 30 days, with no notice but one month's grace to get under the limit. Big uproar, and they've backed off. The new lower limits now are effective 3/1. Hit FAP 4 times and you are out, service cancelled. See the FAP page at WildBlue.com for details, or one of the dozens of rant threads going on now at WildBlue.cc

The fact is that Direcway has definitely done something that affects Vonage. Also affects Packet 8. Hasn't bothered lower-end systems, so I use Vonage now as a forwarding/message service, and make my outgoing calls on Crystal Voice.

I'm mobile, and frequently out of cell range.

I have a friend who operates a lodge and general store in Manson Creek, BC. Not a phone line, paved road, or cell tower within 100 miles. His Vonage is the only phone in town, and used to work well on business class Direcway. When it was never fixed, he switched to the Canadian Telesat KA that is using the same service as WildBlue, and that has him back in business.

So, for Vonage at least, the satellite provider does matter.
