I have tried to get an answer from customer service other than the 'if you have a different area code than where you live, your neighbors will be calling long distance'. I live in an area code of 262 (Waukesha County). My kids all live in area code 414 (Milwaukee County). I have an option of picking area code '262 Milwaukee Zone 2' from the list of available area codes. I am trying to find out if my kids will have to pay long distance to call me. It is confusing because the area code listed is 262 which is Waukesha County, but yet it is called 'Milwaukee Zone 2'. I have written customer service twice. Thanks for any help. |

If your kids have Vonage as well, Vonage to Vonage calls are FREE! And if you have the Residential Unlimited plan, It will also be free for YOU to call them as much as you want.
As far as if 414 to 262 calls , give your kids telephone service provider a call and they should be able to answer that question. We don't have the resources here in CS to find out long distance rates in state. |

I am wondering why there is a 262 area code with a 'Milwaukee Zone 2' label. All of the other 'Milwaukee Zones' 1,3,4, and 5 have a 414 area code. I would think that Vonage could answer that. For example, currently my kids in 414 can call 262 in some areas and not be charged long distance, but other 262 area they are charged long distance. That's why I am curious why there is a 262 area code with a 'Milwaukee Zone 2' label. I currently have something called 'Metro Plan' where I can call 414 and 262 unlimited as a local call for $25 per month. |

"I am trying to find out if my kids will have to pay long distance to call me."
We charge 3.9 cents a minute if you don't have the unlimited plan and you go over your minutes. So you will need to call your childrens phone service provider to see if its long distance for THEM to call you!!!!!!!!
BTW, Waukesha County, according to my records is Area code 436. |

Waukesha County IS '262'. I don't know where you got a 436 area code from. As far as I can tell it doesn't exist. Try it here: http://www.area-code-lookup.info/index.php?search=436. From where my kids live to where I live it is long distance. I thought maybe I could keep my current area code which is 262 and still have my kids call me not at long distance. It doesn't matter anymore because I am taking all of my stuff back. It didn't seem like my question was that complicated. Why would Milwaukee have a Waukesha area code? Just isn't worth it. |

Your right, it is 262. It was late and I was on my 12 hour of work. It was the prefix i was looking at.
So its 262-436-XXXX for Waukesha County.
"It didn't seem like my question was that complicated"
No it wasnt, but your wording was not very clear!
your first question " I am trying to find out if my kids will have to pay long distance to call me"
As I said we dont have the resources to find out if your childrens telephone provider will charge them for that call. YOU HAVE TO CALL THEIR PROVIDER FOR THAT INFO!
As for your other question "I am wondering why there is a 262 area code with a 'Milwaukee Zone 2' label"
I have no idea and I dont understand what benifit you could get from knowing why we name things what we name them. The only thing that should concern you is the area code and prefix. Here is the list for you
262 546 Cedarburg 262 997 Kenosha 262 437 Menomonee 262 244 Oconomowoc 262 264 Pewaukee 262 995 Racine 262 478 Thiensville 262 436 Waukesha 262 247 West Bend
But if you wanna know what Vonage means I can tell you that. Voice Over Net AGE |

For $5.00 a month, you could add a number in 414 that would be free for them to call. If you have unlimited plan, its is already free for you. |

I returned everthing and will wait awhile. I know that my kids currently have to call long distance with their provider. They use their cell phones to get around that. I was wondering if the way Vonage had their zones structured that it was possible their calls to me might be local if I selected the 262 Milwaukee Zone 2. I went to AT&T's site today and they have a page set up that you can determine if a call "From" and a call "To" is local or long distance. I would be nice if Vonage would have something similar. Oh well, water over the dam now. I'll be removing my name from here now. |

I have a problem like yours, but Vonage solved it. I live in Orange Park, FL, which is just outside of Jacksonville. Jacksonville people can call me in Orange Park and the Beaches local. If I try to call the Beach it is long distance. When I got my Vonage number, I got one from Jacksonville. Now, people in all three places can call me local.
I'm sure you aren't lucky enough to have a problem like that, but there are a lot of work arounds. They could call you and you could call them back, you could get a 414 area code line, they could get Vonage.
It seems like the whole reason you didn't like Vonage is that you couldn't tell if 262 to 414 was long distance. Well, just by looking, I can tell that 99% it is. They are DIFFERENT AREA CODES!
As for the "is it long distance from here to there" thing, most Vonage customers have unlimited long distance, so I don't think it is worth the trouble.
Just as a side note, I'll be in Milwaukee on Friday, so I'll be plugging in my Vonage box so I can make calls to 414 numbers without using my cell's roaming. Plus I can call back to 904 numbers.... totally cool. |

Datone,
First you wrote this
"I was wondering if the way Vonage had their zones structured that it was possible their calls to me might be local if I selected the 262 Milwaukee Zone 2"
Then you wrote that
"I went to AT&T's site today and they have a page set up that you can determine if a call "From" and a call "To" is local or long distance."
Why didn't you just use the ATT service you found to determine if your kids call a 262 area code is long distance or not?
Also if you pick a primary number with a 262 area code you can get a virtual number with a 414 area code(then your kids can call you free) |
