When I bring my work laptop home I need to use the dial-up modem to access the corporate intranet. When I try the dial-up modem, I get a Geiger counter sound as the modem on my laptop and the server start to communicate. Is there any solution? One of my techy friends suggested getting a fax line for Vontage and that might solve it. One VOntage Techy said to put a *99 prefix on the number I dialed to slow down the transmission. (That didn't work.) Another Vontage techy said Vontage doesn't support dial-up functionality and there is nothing that can be done. Please help! |

Your going to have to set your modem speed to 9600 baud and use *99 as the prefix. That will possibly work. There is no way your going to get a 56k connection over voip. |

*99 tells Vonage to switch to a codec for fax calls. This is useful in allowing dial up modems to make connections when the dialup modem is set for slower speed. It does not actually slow the connection down itself.
Try telling your modem to establish a connection to your corporate Internet at 9600 or 14.4K. Depending on what software you are using try to find a maximum speed setting on your modem configuration screen.
Failing that you can use a program like HyperTerminal to lock your modem to slower speeds. If you need assistance doing that re-post and PM me and I will put together some instructions.
Bad news;
1) Your corporate server may not accept a lower speed connection.
2) If it works you are going to be using a lower speed connection.
Modems work in a limited fashion with VoIP. If you make extensive use of this connection then your best bet is to ask your corporate IT department to set up a VPN over the Internet. |

If you have a choice, try using an access number in New York. |
