Everything was going good. Number port took just 15 days. All the home phones were working fine. THEN, I got directv. Vonage doesn’t like Directv, or the other way around? Directv test call went ok, usually, but the daily call/download failed over and over. After spending most the afternoon and evening on the phone to directv and Vonage, they only want to point the finger at the other. Their suggestions were useless, and I got tired of messing with it real fast. I want PNP, not tear your hair out.
Close, but not quite there (voip).
So its back to the old landline, till either Vonage figures this out or directv uses lan instead of a phone line for the service. Either way, I just want it to work, and it doesn’t.

Voip service is not compatible with modems, and DirecTV uses a modem.

Why does DirecTV use a modem?

DirecTV is under the impression that they can identify your physical location by using the ANI information from your toll free calls to them. We all know that with Vonage service this is no longer a valid assumption. At some point DirecTV may need to switch to a mechanism that makes use of satellite spot beams and software in the receiver itself to allow the receiver to determine its location.

DirecTV also uploads PPV information when movies are ordered by the remote. Ordering movies by remote is convenient but if you have more than one receiver ordering online allows the movie to be watched on any of your receivers.

If sports subscriptions and ordering PPV by remote are not important to you then you shouldn't need a phone line.

DirecTV TiVo units work with Vonage

Most people can eventually get DirecTV TiVo units to work with Vonage. Some people, like me, just hook the receiver up to the Vonage line, set some dialing options and everything works fine. Others give up the capability to order PPV by remote and get sports subscriptions and connect the TiVo part of their unit directly to their LAN.

I recommend upgrading to a TiVo unit for DirecTV. It is worth the money even if you have to sacrifice some programming for a while to pay for it. From the sound of your post (test call, daily call) you may in fact already be using a TiVo unit.

works great for me -- I bought a $99 Directivo reciever at best buy and had to put in some dialing options and it dials out through Vonage with no problem.

This forum has an entire section dedicated to TiVo and modem stuff. Apparently good things to try involve:

- using codes to drop the TiVo's modem speed
- putting a DSL filter on the line... for some reason
- using *99 to force Vonage into max-bandwidth mode
- calling a New York access number
