Hi all:
I'm a tech enthusiast and Cisco employee, so Vonage has been my idea and so far I think it's terrific. However, my wife has been reporting call quality problems: 1) Hard to hear, 2) Echo on line sometimes, 3) She sounds like a robot to the other person sometimes. I've noticed these problems, but only very rarely. It has been very reliable and never dropped a call since i installed it about a month ago.
CONFIG 1) My Motorola ATA is hooked directly to the broadband router. (I have a router behind it for internal switching/routing) 2) My broadband speed is pretty consistently 2.5M down/650K up. 3) I've set my bandwidth saver to 90 kbs (best quality)
QUESTION Should I report the problem to Vonage? My worry is if they try to "fix" it they might make it unstable or degrade the quality in changing things around.
I've heard from many folks that "the quality is better than a landline". I don't think so. To me, it sounds consistently like a cell phone. What's your experience? |

I'm set up with the Cisco ATA unit installed behind a Netgear RP614v2 router. I have experienced very few problems and the call quality has been pretty good on the whole. The biggest problem we get is the echo. We've been trying to mentally note who we are calling when we get the worst echo and so far it seems to be pretty constistent - if we get the echo to someone, we will always get the echo - if we don't get the echo to someone, we will never get the echo. We don't have hard data to prove it, but it seems to be true...
We primarily use two different cordless phones and they seem to have a worse echo problem than the two corded phones we occasionally use.
I originally had some calls where only one party could be heard, but have not experienced that lately. I also re-worked some of the cable connections inside my house and that seems to have helped overall. |
