Hi,
I'm new at this but couldn't find similar posts.
I have a WRT54GP2 (the free offer) but am having trouble integrating it into my home network.

Here's the situation:

1. Cable enters the house (Comcast) on another floor; we have a regular Linksys wireless router there and get great performance everywhere in the house.

2. I'd like to use Vonage on a second line, focused on an office one floor up from the entry point and the Linksys wrt54g.

3. I thought I'd be able to turn off the router features of the wrt54gp2 and just use it as an access point to route calls, etc. through the Router downstairs.

4. That doesn't seem to be the case, however. I've tried reconfiguring the wrt54gp2 every which way but I can't get it seen on my net. I've turned off its DHCP facility, assigned it its own IP address in the 192.168 range, and turned disabled the wireless portion. Nothing works.

5. Do I need another piece of equipment here (bridge, switch?) or am I missing some piece? I haven't activated the device yet with Vonage; I want to be sure it does basic networking first.

Thanks fin advance for any suggestions,
Tom

How are you connecting the devices together? You should be connecting the WAN port of the Vonage box to a LAN port on the first router.

Or are you trying to do a wireless connection?

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply!

The Vonage router is a floor above the entry router. I tried connecting from both the WAN port and one of the Ethenet ports at the Vonage end. At the point of the original router, it's connected through the network terminating in one of the ethernet ports.

I could also try it with wireless since we have great signal strength but the unit didn't seem to have that kind of flexibility. (n fact, wth the wrt54gp2 configured to disable wireless, it still shows up on a network scan)

I don't think it's possible to make the WRT54GP2 a wireless client... I was just making sure that wasn't what you were trying to do.

Anyway, what's not working? Are you able to connect a computer to one of the WRT54GP2's LAN ports and get online?

No, that's the issue.

Here's the configuration in simple terms:

Internet Enters via Comcast on Floor 1. Linksys 54G Router (not Vonage) distributes signal via wired and wireless routes to 4-6 computers.

Office with the Vonage wrt54gp2 is on 2nd floor, connected by wired and wireless options. Vonage router is set to not act as dhcp router and to use a set IP address (192.168.1.111). I can configure the Vonage router from a PC wired to it, As soon as that's disconnected and the Vonage router is just network connected, I can't reach it.

I've tried connecting the WAN port and one of the ethernet ports to the network plug - no change. I also tried a crossover cable there.

Thanks again...

Is your WRT54G downstairs running a DHCP server? Before messing with static IP's, just try to get the WRT54GP2 to pull an IP with DHCP.

Also, note that the WRT54GP2 has 2 IP addresses: one for the LAN side, one for the WAN side. Those addresses shouldn't be on the same subnet, even if there's nothing plugged into the GP2's lan ports.

paul is right. you might be setting static ip on the wan side instead on the lan side. set it to obtain an ip automatically in internet connection type, disable dhcp, then assign it a local ip address of 192.168.1.X where X shouldn't be the same as your main router's ip and shouldn't be included in the ip addresses that your router is giving to its clients. if your main router is also linksys, i believe its start ip address in dhcp is 100, so X shouldn't be greater than 100. and i almost forgot, connect your main router to one of the LAN ports of your GP2, becuse it will just function as a switch. try it and post the results

Er, that's not right at all... The Vonage device needs to be connected through its WAN port if you want the phone to work. You need to be messing with static/DHCP for the WAN stuff, not the LAN stuff. You can leave the LAN ports empty, except when you want to configure stuff.

oh yeah, paul was right, completely forgotten that you're setting up the gp2 for the Voip, i got stuck with using it as a plain access point. yup, it should be connected to the wan port. and assign your gp2 with a lan ip different from the wan. try giving it a lan ip of 192.168.2.1
