PostPosted: Sat Jan 10, 2004 10:32 pm    Post subject: Thinking of getting Vonage to use phone from Bogota Colombia Reply with quote Back to top

I'm thinking of getting this service to send a phone to my girlfriend in Bogota, Colombia. She has ADSL 256/128 but the modem the phone company gave her plugs into her computer via USB not ethernet. Can I simply buy a USB to ethernet adapter and hook up the service that way? I was told that if her ISP does not use PPOE protocol I would also have to buy a router ? What are the chances that her phone company, E.T.B., does not use PPOE? And where would I buy an ADSL router, I looked through google and did not find many for sale here in the U.S. She is not computer literate (neither am I), would she be able to figure out how to connect the service or is it too complicated? Thank you for your help.

ppoe is pretty pouplar chances are her dsl modem also has an ethernet port on the back.. if it does. i woudl buy a cheap router. set it up to connect to the dsl via ppoe (if applicable) then plug the Vonage adapter into router and comptuer into router..

or

you can purchase the Vonage service and then add a line for 10$ the add a line for 10 you can use a usb phone and she can call you that way.

Thanks for the info!! I will be ordering the Vonage service next week and hopefully it will work from Bogota. She changed her modem to one that uses an ethernet connection and hopefully it will not be a problem connecting the Vonage service. I will let you all know how it goes.

After traveling to Bogota, Colombia and trying to get this to work for a couple of days I have to report that I have failed to get the service to work from Bogota. They use ADSL here and the phone company is ETB (ADSL 256 broadband). I cannot get it to work with or without a router (linksys befw11s4). I connect everything just as the instructions say but I cannot get any web pages when I click internet explorer thus I can't even configure the router or the phone adapter by typing their ip addresses. The setup here is wall-modem-computer and I have to type in the username and password each time I want to connect to the internet then once I connect to ETB I click internet explorer and I connect to the internet. Anyone have any suggestions ... if not I guess I'll just have to cancel the service. I called the ETB (Bogota's phone company) and they cannot help, and I called Linksys and they cannot help either.

Thank you for any help you may be able to offer.

Guessing, DCHP is not being assigned.
Without it, you cannot use the Vonage system.

I hope someone else will post how to set it with your set-up.

This is a common problem with DSL subscribers using PPPOE. The modem should be setup as a bridge and the Linksys router configured with the UN/PW. Contact the phone company to ask them how to bridge the dsl modem and ask for the settings you need to setup on the router (PPPOE, LLC or VC based, ect..) What is most likely happening, there is an IP conflict with the router and modem (default for linksys is 192.168.1.1 as is with most dsl modems.) Let me know if this helps!
