I don't have a Tivo or a WRT54G, but I thought I'd share this idea anyway, just in case someone here would want to try to implement it.
There are some sites that show you how to hack a serial port onto the WRT54G: http://www.rwhitby.net/wrt54gs/serial.html
And there's lots of projects where people run their own Linux-based software on the WRT54G. I propose that it might be possible to install a PPP server onto the router, and connect it to a Tivo using a null modem cable.
This is really only theoretical right now, but it might allow you do get DirecTivo over broadband without needing a dedicated computer. |

I think this is an interesting idea, but I am leary of having my Vonage adapter and my router combined. Adding in a PPP server and playing around inside with a soldering iron would give me the willies. Ultimately I want to make cheap phone calls.
I have always wondered if there wasn't something available to do this already. Best Data makes a combined 56K modem/Ethernet router (56net) intended to be used for sharing dial up connections. It can't be that difficult for a manufacturer to turn it around and make it useful for this purpose. |

The same thing might also be possible with one of those programmable microcontrollers with ethernet and serial ports. I think you'd have to be pretty hard-core into computers/electronics to attempt either of them though.
It's something I'd be interested in trying if only I had a DirecTiVo and disposabe income. |
