Post subject: Very happy with vonage
I see a lot of people on this forum with problems. I also see a lot of people with legitimate gripes about their service. I have been one of the lucky ones with very few problems with my service. I've been a
Vonage
customer since January of this year and have been extremely happy with my service. I work with technology everyday and yet was very apprehensive about switching from traditional POTS. After getting everything "dialed in," it has turned out to be a good decision. The only thing I would really like to see is a viable E911 system. If the becomes available,
Voip
will really take off even more than it already has. I look forward to that day.
Thanks to Dan and all who contribute to this forum. It is a great source of information that I use on a daily basis to keep up on the
Vonage
service and
Voip
technology in general.
Regards,
Bill Poore

Thanks Bill,
As always, it is the members that make this forum what it is and I in turn give them all credit for this site.

Post subject: So far so good
I have had
Vonage
for about two weeks now. I bought the device from a Radio Shack and plugged it into a Belkin Wi-Fi router. I also have a multifunction fax/copier plugged into the same router. So far, I have had no real problems with it. I set up my account to use Simulring with my cell phone, and I gave my cell phone's email address (it is sent as an SMS) in the
Vonage
email notification space. That way, when I get a voice message to my
Vonage
number, I also get a text message to my cell phone saying I have a voice message. Sometimes, in meetings, I have to turn my cell phone off, so this is a way of telling me a voice message had been left.
The only problem is that if I am using my cell phone, and the Simulring rings my cell phone at the same time, the call goes to my cell phone's voice mail instead of the
Vonage
voice mail. If I turned off voice mail on my cell phone, and only gave out my
Vonage
number, that would be solved, since, I assume if the cell phone v/m did not pick up, it would revert back to the
Vonage
Voice Mail. Other than that, I have been, so far, please with
Vonage
.
I also have that multifunction fax machine plugged into the second RJ-11 port on the
Vonage
box, and it seems to work fine both receiving and sending faxes.

I have a setup with two lines, and one is connected to a Lexmark 7170 all in one...I never have issues with faxing either, so I can't say enough good things about
Vonage
. I just make sure I keep a high enough upload bandwidth to handle everything!

I have had the same experience. As soon as
Vonage
and I got used to each other, we get along great.
The QOS is excellent. Nobody I talk to can tell the difference between
Voip
or my old POTS.
I pray that the Government does not figure out a way to get their greedy little paws into my
Vonage
bill! I had over $15.00 in extra "charges"... TAXES! on my old Qwest bill!

cargojack,
would altering the voicemail setting in the rt31p2 help with the voicemails being left on your cell phone? That is, if the rt31p2 has a shorter wait time, would the voice mail be triggered by the rt31p2 instead of your cell phone?
Likewise, is there a way to extend the voicemail wait time on your cell phone so that your home phone voicemail would be triggered first? Just some thoughts, mundy5
ps I've been a very satisfied customer myself. No complaints here.

I think the problem is, when he's on the phone, it goes to voicemail instantly. Not a whole lot you can do about that.

Mundy, thanks for the help, but I do not know what rt31p2 or how to set it. I wonder if you could explain that?
Paul is correct, when the simulring sends the call to my cell phone, and I ignore the call waiting, it gets sent to my cell phone's voice mail. That is not really a big problem, I would just prefer that it goes to my
Vonage
voice mail.
I did encounter something that bothers me.
I have a LinksysPAP device plugged into a Belkin router. Link #1 is my voice line, and I have link #2 connected to a fax machine.
My cable modem went off line (they are doing construction down the street and kep interrupting serivce) today, and, because I am still experimenting and testing my
Vonage
service and my fax machine, I had earlier called my fax line and got a message that my number was out of service. I called my
Vonage
voice line and it immediately went to Voice mail. I would prefer that my Fax line just ring, because if someone gets that message, they will think that my number is no longer in service instead of merely off line for awhile.

cargojack,
my apologies. It wasn't clear that you have the PAP2 device. Regardless of the device, there are settings on the
Vonage
website when you login to your account to increase or reduce the wait time before the device sends the phone call to VM. So in my case, I could reduce the wait time to 15 seconds and it would send the call to VM in my
Vonage
. This would work if my cell phone waits say 20 seconds before sending a 2nd call to VM.
I haven't had a cell phone in a few years but I thought the manuals would tell you how long before a 2nd incoming phone call would ring before going to VM. It's not the normal length of time but it still waits around 10-15 seconds does it not? Anyway, I was just thinking about the wait time. If there was anyway in your cell phone to increase the wait time before sending calls to VM, that would be the best since decreasing the wait time on your
Vonage
would mean that you would have to get to the phone pretty fast at home.
Anyway, just some throwing some ideas around. It sounds like you're happy with your
Vonage
experience...
