just remember, when it comes to SOHO networking, almost everybody recommends linksys, so don't make the same mistake Very Happy

After having one router competely fail after only 2 days and worrying about the heat generated by this device I solved the problem

A trip to Radio Shack and I found a 115v cooling fan that I can stand next to the router. The case now seems to be room temperature.

Upgraded the firmware and now hoping this solves some of the early problems I have seen, like dropped network connections

This is something that has been undocumented, or at least very hard to find.

First thing you all need to know is that this router DOES work. Once installed between your working modem and PC, you will NOT get online. You MUST sign up with Vonage and enter the WAN MAC address to get online with Vonage, at which time you will get updates for the router. The device MUST be activated by clicking on the "Retail Activation" link. The update procedure can take as little as 10 minutes or as long as two hours.

The fact that it is a free device after all the rebates offsets the anger, frustration and time wasted getting it to work. These procedures should be on a warning label with the unit.

I have the wrtp54g also and have not been able to get it working. I get to the setup screen and interface with it. Then it gets an internet IP address. Pinging diagnostics gets 100% packet loss. I'm on my second router and have exactly the same issue. First firmware was 1.00.18 whereas the second one has 1.00.20. Any suggestions from anybody on the forum? Note that when I switch back to my other Linksys router it works like a charm.

mcs70:

If you have access to another ethernet connection, at work or school, try taking the router there and see if it works there (assuming that your organization uses DHCP, of course).

If it works there, then the problem is probably local. In my case, my cable modem worked perfectly with my old router, but not with the wrtp54g. I got a new cable modem, a Linksys BEFCMU10, and now everything is fine. The old cable modem was a D-Link DCM-200 which according to everyone on this forum is a piece of junk (even though it worked fine for 2 years).

An expensive solution, I know, but it worked for me.

Good luck.
