Ok, here goes. I just signed up for Vonage and got my equipment today. The problem is that I have structured wiring in my home and I want to know how to keep my existing service and also utilize Voip.

In the case of a power outage, I still want to have access to a landline.

Pardon me if this has already been discussed but I haven't found it exactly addressed.

Just hang a single phone instrument off the back of your Vonage router. Or if you can put a splitter on the back, you can hang two.

They also have cordless phones now that you can buy in a 3-pack, and only the main base needs to have a phone line. Plug that one direct into the back of the router, and place the other 2 remote stations anywhere in the house. Then you have 3 cordless phones on your Vonage, with vitrually no wiring done.

Do you want Vonage and POTS at all of your phone jacks?

You can use your Voip equipment on a spare pair and have both systems available over your home wiring. You will need to decide whether you want Vonage or POTS as line 1. However this will be easy to change later if you want to switch it.

Since you have structured wiring you can do everything in your wiring box. Each line from the wall jacks should be coming here and be connected to a termination block of some type. It is just a matter of connecting POTS to the pair for one line and Vonage to the pair for the other.

http://michigantelephone.mi.org/distribute.html has comprehensive information for wiring.

Line one will be available normally at all jacks. You can then buy 2 line splitters to connect to your wall jacks allowing you to connect your phones to either line 1 or line 2 where needed. If you are worried about backup phone service for emergencies then you will want to make sure you aren't using a cordless phone.

Take a look at that site above and then post specific questions. If you have a digital camera, pictures of your wiring cabinet really help solicit detailed responses.

A(n) ups doesn't really help as much as you'd think. We lost power for 8 hours yesterday, and although we used a generator, the cable TV only lasted an hour or so. No cable, no Internet, no Vonage. YMMV.

I don't think most people are looking for 8 hours of backup. I would bet that the vast majority of outages are much shorter, I certainly didn't size my UPS for more than a few hours.

However, I would also bet that a lot of people who do have a UPS hooked up are using cordless phones that won't work when the power is out.

Besides, at least half of the purpose of having a UPS in front of your network equipment is power surge protection.
