For the last day and a half, my phone calls have been horrible. Callers can barely hear me and when I speak there is roughly a 5 second delay before they hear anything.

My internet connection is 2 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up. Connection works fine; I can ping sites without any packet loss.

I have changed nothing in my configuration.

Here's my "testyourVoIP" report:

It's no wonder you are having problems. The first thing you need to do is identify the source of the dropped packets on your outbound connection. Try pingplotter and see if you can identify a node that is dropping the packets. Hopefully it will be something your ISP can resolve.

Your inbound latency is horrific too, but I am hoping that is a side effect of your outbound problems. What type of broadband do you have?

Suggestion: add your ISP to your signature

My ISP is the borough in which I live. It's a fiber-optic connection. I'll try pingplotter next. Thanks.

What IP address should I be running pingplotter against? I'm located in Eastern Pennsylvania.

Thanks.

Vonage told me to run it against Yahoo!. Someone on this site posted 216.115.23.23 which is supposedly a Vonage server that responds to ICMP messages.

Okay...I've set the packet size to 1400 Bytes (I also tried smaller sizes... just slightly lesser latency). Anything I've tried with pingplot that is supposedly a Vonage server... the final hop is unreachable.

When I traced yahoo.com... here was the result for a few samples:

After about 6 minutes the average latency crawled up to 7882 ms.
Something appears to be wrong at the gateway of my ISP, no?

Here's where it gets weird.

I'm posting from my business now which is across the street from my apartment. I have a Vonage business line in here, as well as a regular landline. Testmyvoip gives me a 4.1 and I have no latency problems here. The phone sounds great.

My internet provider is the same, and my router's ip address is on the same subnet as my apartment's ip. Exact same service in both places.

Over at my apartment I tried the Vonage modem both behind and in front of the wireless router I use. Didn't matter. It worked fine behind it just two days ago.

Am I correct that the holdup is at the second hop? 64.9.40.1 ?

Call your ISP and see if they're able to run tests on your equipment from their end. You could have a bad physical connection, or faulty hardware.

My ISP had somehow mistakenly capped my connection to 64 Kbps upstream. That was the problem. They set it back to 1 Mbps and credited me for a month of internet service Very Happy

Thanks for your suggestions everyone.

Actually it only responds to UDP.
