After 6 months of research I finally have the solution to my DirectTiVo over Vonage problem.
Install a 2-line DSL filter from Radio Shack ($16.99) or a 1-line DSL filter from Home Depot ($5.97) Set Dial Prefix: ,#104 Set Call Waiting Prefix: *99
I have 3 DirectTivo's Directv HR10-250 Hughes GXCEBOT Sony SAT-60
Each one connected first time and every time with getting a new number, making a test call and making a daily call.
You must use a DSL filter for this to work! |

Glad someone is on the research path. What about a cable modem? |

The DSL filter is hooked up in the back of the Linksys router. The filter also improves the voice quality. |

Thanks for the info. My HR10-250 is up and running smoothly. Bye Bye Verizon land line! That DSL Filter from Radio Shack for 16.99 did the trick. |

I have tried all this on my HR10-250 and 99 times out of 100, it fails. What was really disappointing, was that when I first plugged in the DSL filter, it worked! I was ecstatic. But, that was 5 weeks ago and I have not had a single successful connection since. Here's my question: There are many, many posts all over the boards (e.g. dbstalk, tivocommunity, avsforum) about Tivo and Vonage. But, they rarely differentiate between models of Tivo. I have read (somewhere) that the HR10-250 does not respond to the modem slow-down commands, like ,#104. So, the tricks that work on regular Tivo's are not applicable to the HR10-250. Since a couple of posters on this thread specify it is working on an HR10-250, I would really like to know if it works as well as the other Tivo's and if my observation above about the HR10-250 not responding to some codes is correct:? |

Try a different number for your local are code. I was lucky to find a local number that worked with the HR10-250 but there are some phone numbers that the test call does not work with. Usually if you have a successful test call, you'll have a successful daily call. |

There are two different series of DirecTiVo units. Series 1 responds to modem slow down codes including ,#016 and I believe ,#034. Series 2 may or may not respond to ,#034. Either DirecTV or TiVo claims that they do, some people in the TiVo Community tested them and believe they do not. Generally speaking Series 2 units have USB ports and are still getting software upgrades. Series 1 units have no such port and are no longer being upgraded. A complete list of models and what series they are in can be found on the Hinsdale How-to TiVo upgrade site. |

Thanks for the responses. BPatti - I have tried area codes all over the country, especially around NY/NJ, but I haven't found a magic modem in the bunch. scerruti - That was a good site reference. So now I know the HR10-250 is a Series 2. I tend to believe that it does not respond to the modem slow down commands. The whole idea seems strange, because since the dawn of time, modems have known how to negotiate speeds (down) to get a reliable connection. |
