PostPosted: Tue Jun 21, 2005 7:21 pm    Post subject: Setting up VoIP in a small business: Confusion and questions Reply with quote Back to top

Hi there,

I am absolutely confused about the Vonage system. I’ve read quite a few forum entries and did research in google for hours.

I try to explain our situation and our needs:

we are a small business and have 1 dsl/fax line and 2 more regular phone lines, our service provider is SBC.
our office is located in san francisco, and we have a “virtual” office located in another city, which means for that office we have another “virtual” phone and fax number. Calls or faxes to this virtual numbers are going to be forwarded to our office in san francisco. That means all of our physical lines are here in san Francisco and the other fax and phone numbers exists just virtual.

so let me summarize:
• 2 different phone numbers / 2 different fax numbers.
• 2 landlines and 1 fax/dsl line physically located in ONE office
• phone system with one base and 7 handsets

- I don’t really understand what I would have to do as first step. Just keep the fax/dsl line and order 2 business plan packages for $49.99 each (one for every line)?
- what would I have to install where?
- who do I have to inform about what? SBC, Vonage?
- what about number transferring?
It is extremely important that we keep all our numbers and are permanently reachable during business hours.

Please tell a poor intern, who had this idea switching to Voip without knowing how complicated this is going to be, how she has to explain this issue to her manager and the other employees…. Smile
and I really would like to understand everything about that as well…

thank you so much!
a.

OK,
1)I don’t really understand what I would have to do as first step.

First you would need to call Vonage and explain to them your needs. You need to keep your broadband internet connection to use with Vonage Voip. It sounds like you will need 2 buisness accounts. The first will be $49.99 and the second and any there after would be $44.99 a month. You would also get a free fax line with each. But depending on your needs you may only need one line. Go here for more info on the Buisness plan http://www.vonage.com/products_premium_sb.php

2)what would I have to install where?

You would get a device that plugs into your broadband modem, very easy to setup.

3)who do I have to inform about what? SBC, Vonage?

Call Vonage , they will fill you in on the rest

4)what about number transferring?

They do number transferring called LNP which takes a minimum of 20 buisness days so you can keep your number, but go here and enter your current numbers to be sure if your numbers can be ported.
http://www.vonage.com/features.php?feature=lnp

They also have virtual numbers so you can continue your virtual existance where ever you want people to think you are.

These are just some gereral answers i hope they helped. If you have any other questions feel free to reply.

hey you,

thank you for your respond!!!

1) i knew that number transferring is possible, but i've read somewhere that we would get a temporary number. this would be impossible for us because we need to keep our current numbers available all the time...

2) i would like to add 2 virtual phone numbers for our other office, lets say are code 530.
in this area code we have one fax number and one phone number, but this phone and fax doesn't exist physically, just virtual, faxes and calls are forwarded to our real san francisco office phone and fax...

what i would need from Vonage now, is just 1 line (a phone number including fax) and 2 additional virtual phone numbers.
virtual number 1 $4.99: fax in area code 530
virtual number 2 $4.99: phone in area code 530

my question now, is it possible to use one of the 2 additional virtual numbers as a fax number? or is it technical not possible...?

AND when bying to additional virtual numbers, can we keep our current existing 530..... numbers and just transfer them to virtual numbers? that would be very important, too...

thank you
anke

Well first, with the business line you receive a second line fax for free with 500 outgoing and unlimited incoming. You CANNOT port a fax number to Vonage but you can select the area code for the fax line. So, If you need a virtual number plus and a primary so you have the fax presence in 2 locations, I believe thats possible as well.

hey, i am not sure if i understand you right... that means we cannot port/transfer our fax numbers to Vonage, so we get new fax numbers, just the area code can stay as it is...?

and does it also mean, that it would be possible to order 2 additional virtual numbers, one as fax usage and one as phone? we need 2 fax numbers, even if we only have one fax. and one fax number is included in the 1st line.
the faxes from the second fax number have to be forwarded to our real one fax...

do you know what i mean?
thank yoou again!!!!
anke Smile

OK, you can only port one number per device. The device(router) comes with 2 ports(lines) so one would be your phone line (and you can have multiple phones attached to that) and one would be your fax line. Now you could port you fax number to your primary line(line 1) but for line 2(your phone line) you would not be able to port a number. The only way you could do it is to have 2 devices and 2 buisness acounts and have one for phones and port your phone number to that. Then have your second devices line one as a Fax line and port your fax number to that and have the other line for either a Fax line or phone. But this would require 2 devices and 2 accounts and as far as price, I dont know what Vonage could work out with you for that.

ok, let me clear things out, if i get what you want correctly, here are the fax... i mean facts:

*you can have multiple lines and/or plan in just one account, the advantage for this is you can setup call hunt on all your numbers.
*you can have just one physical line and have another number (virtual number) to point to the same line, you can choose your area code.
*as far as i know, you cannot have a virtual number pointing to a fax line
*if you have one physical fax line and want to have a virtual number for that, i recommend you to just make it a regular phone line and use a telefax, but of course there are pros and cons if you do that
*call 1-VONAGE-HELP and ask them what is the best thing you can do in this scenario

Also, either way you choose, even if you have 1 device and 1 account, you can have 1 line as a phone line and 1 as a fax. Only one number can be ported for that device. So you could get your buisness phone number ported to line 1 and can get as many virtual numbers as you choose to point to that line. Then you could have your fax on line 2. But you would not be able to get your fax number ported to that device cause you already ported your phone number to line one and as I said"1 Device, 1Account, 1 number ported". However you would be assighned a new number with the area code of your choice as well as as many virtual numbers you wanted to point to your fax on line 2. Thats why I said with 2 devices you would be able to port your fax to one and your Buisness phone to the other.

Whew, what a work out Very Happy

Sup BJ,

Anyway she wants to port her fax and her phone #. So If thats the case she may need to accounts if its that important. But if not she should stick with one device, port her buisness line, and get a new fax.
That would be best.

See ya Monday man!!!
