Switching phone numbers, how long?

Man, thanks for the replies from everyone! I'll probably call Vonage in a bit and see if I can "press" the issue a bit, at least to see if they can give me a probably time on when they believe my number will be switched.

I joined Vonage on December 10 and made the decision to switch my home phone number to Vonage on December 29. I faxed all info to Vonage on Dec 29. Vonage acknowledged the fax on December 30th. Today (Jan 20) the transfer of my number took effect. The number was transferred form MCI.

I also had MCI and it took from 11/13/03 when paperwork was submitted to MCI from Vonage to 1/6/04 when my number was switched. I guess about 7 weeks. They (Vonage) gave me a month credit.

I signed up on Oct. 10th 2003. All paperwork was processed and the number transfer request went to Verizon by Oct. 17th. The number FINALLY transfered on January 6th, 2004! After much barking, Vonage told me that they would NOT charge me their monthly fee until the number transfer was completed. Great except I forfeited my free second month as I was refered by a friend.

My transfer went pretty much the way Vonage indicates on their website:

LOA received 12-23-03

Scheduled transfer date from SBC to Vonage: 1-27-04

Not too bad, considering some of those days were "down time" for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
