Softphone use outside US - experiences?

I'm a happy Vonage customer whose daughter will be studying in Europe for a year. I've been considering SoftPhone as a cost effective means of staying in touch.

Does anyone have any experiences to report using SoftPhone outside the US? Is it reasonable to assume that it will work well?

I've been using it in the Bahamas for the last 2 weeks via my broadband connection in the hotel. Works like a charm. I also have alls forwarded to my Bahamas cell phone, because the rate is so cheap.

Your daughter should have no problem using Softphone in Europe. Some countrys do prohibit use of Voip but Europe is not one of them. She can also use it with 56k which is also a plus.

I used it while in Amsterdam and Northwest Germany over the Christmas holidays and SoftPhone worked great for calling back to the States. Little bit more latency than using regular Vonage service but totally acceptable. In Amsterdam was via broadband service in hotels, and in Germany at family friends' house over DSL and 802.11b wireless.
Why isn't Vonage expanding into continental Europe (Holland, Germany, Belgium etc.??)

Is Australia a prohibited country for Softphone?

Have used softphone in Italy, Portugal, Kuwait, UK, Ireland, etc. Only place it would not work was Barbados. It seems that the port is blocked since telecom is highly regulated (read taxed) there. However, a (un-named very popular) P2P Voip app worked fine (since it doesn't use the standard Voip ports)
