Post subject: Number portability experience
What has everyone's experience been thus far on moving their numbers?
I am waiting for my number to be moved from Verizon in the Santa Monica area.
Vonage
's Dashboard shows that my LOA has been sent to Verizon as of December 11, but nothing after that.
With that said, what has your experience been with moving numbers? Are the landline providers just dragging their feet on this matter? Or does it really take FOREVER for this to happen?
Finally, is there anything I can do to expedite this matter? Hassle someone at Verizon (who?)? Get in touch with the FCC?

I heard that some people are having trouble with it. For example, it took almost 2 months to transfer my phone number from MCI.

So far, my experience has kind of sucked.
My LOA arrived at
Vonage
11/24. It is now 30 business days since then, and no transfer as of yet.
To
Vonage
's credit, they did give me a free month when I complained, so you might want to do the same. Still, they need to change their marketing to something accurate. I consider the current situation to be very misleading.

My experience is similarly bad.
Vonage
received my business phone number transfer request November 30. It took until December 15 before they sent it to the carrier. It is now January 11 and still no port.
Vonage
took 2 whole weeks to even send it to the other carrier, saying there was processing involved. Yeah, right. There is very little paperwork. They could have done it in 20 minutes or less the day the got it on November 30. I called the number porting area on January 9 and they said they will send a followup letter to my old carrier, but who knows if it will take them another two weeks to do that. I am about to drop the idea of using
Vonage
. I will give them to the end of this week to get the number moved, but beyond that I am going to call it quits and stay with BellSouth, figuring that
Vonage
is just not yet ready for prime time for business.

My switch from Frontier (Rochester, NY area) is scheduled for the 13th, just short of a month from when it was requested.

November 13, 2003 Letter of Authorization (LOA) Received
November 24, 2003 Transfer Sent to Carrier
I've sent numerous requests for updates... the latest I got was "we'll ask our carrier to expedite the transfer." Uh huh.
At this point I'm feeling a bit against a wall, as I'm preparing to move at the end of this month and cannot cancel my Verizon service until my number is ported to
Vonage
. I'm really not sure what I'm going to do...

Didn't number portability start on Nov 24, 2003? That would explain why it went through on that day.
Here is what mine looks like - perhaps things are getting more efficient.

Number portability started in November only for cell phones the 100 largest metro markets. It had been around for years for wireline phones. My business problems relate to getting the transfer of the wireline phone number to
Vonage
, not a cell phone.

I sent my request in November 15th. As of today, it still hasn't gone through, although the last e-mail I got from
Vonage
said it would happen today (1/12).
I did move after sending in the request, which means that for over a month my landline phone number is still active in my old apartment. I couldn't cancel Qwest service as I would lose my old number. Thus, I am paying for landline service that I can't even use. I have been pretty disappointed in this, and I will be asking for a refund, but I'm still sticking with
Vonage
. My phone bills are 50% of what they were before, and as bad as the phone number transfer has been, it is nothing compared to the customer service at Qwest.
