I haven't seen many references to this so I thought I would share what I have learned. I requested a number transfer in January. On June 13, I was successfully transferred to Vonage.
Vonage is not a telecommunications company, so your local carrier is not required to respond to number transfer requests as obligated by the FCC. Vonage is a DATA company - serving up IP! So, Vonage has hired a telecommunications company, called Focal, to be the third party transfer agent. When you make a request to transfer your number to Vonage, Vonage makes the request to Focal, and Focal requests the number from your local carrier. Vonage will not give you any information about your number transfer besides the usual escalation email. If there is a problem with your transfer, your local carrier is not that interested in investigating the problem as they only hasten the loss of a customer.
So, if you are waiting too long for your number transfer, call Focal at 866-362-2567
REPEAT, call Focal at 866-362-2567
One call to them, they actually investigated the problem, unlike Vonage, and the called my back TWICE. Once for more information, the second to give me a confirmation of the transfer date. And on that date, 6/13, I became the frustrated customer of Vonage. I love their phone service.. I hate their customer service.
