Post subject: Installation setup - WRTP54G and WRT54GS
nOOB here - hopefully I can get some feedback on the following..
Called into Tech Support and they mentioned I could still keep my existing WRT54GS, and connect the new WRTP54G I just bought at Best Buy.
thus; setup could be - cable mod > wrt54gs > wrtp54g > cordless
a) good idea? or does this kill my bandwidth
b) won't the two routers cause ip config issues?
c) the BEST way to configure the setup, step by step
d) it's late, and I'm tired
Have Adelphia Premier - getting about 700 up
Thanx!

hoping the reason you went overboard with the wrtp54g is because it was free. if not, a good idea would be finding a cheaper/free device like the pap2, especially since you have a wrt54gs already.
a) why would it kill your bandwidth? it shouldn't. I would disable wireless on the wrtp54g.
b) not if no computers are plugged into the wrtp54g. I assume you have no reason to do it, so don't. otherwise you can still set it up fine (you're not the first with two routers on the same network).
c) personally, I would use a pap2 or rt31p2 behind the wrt54gs. if you want to stick with the wrtp54g, ok, but there do seem to be a lot of issues with it already. they'll probably get ironed out, but so far I'm a little scared of it. this is a support forum, so people with problems are 100x more likely to visit, but even still. then I would disable the wireless on the wrtp54g and have all my computers running off the wrt54gs. I would also set up qos on the wrt54gs (check your manual if unfamiliar). I leave it at auto detect bandwidth and give high priority to my rt31p2 (wrtp54g in your case) by its mac address.

yep - got sucked into the free router promo being pushed by everybody. I am wondering if I was entitled to a free adapter at Best Buy, had I not bought the wrtp54g ?
In either case, great info thanks, hopefully , even if I can't return the
Vonage
router, I'll follow your directions. After reading into other threads, looks like I need to get the updated firmware as well.
thanks so much -

update -
after 3 hours (and 3 reps) just trying to update firmware -
Vonage
tech told me to return the wrtp54g - phone side worked , router side did not
btw - all three refused to provide the .img file to me, stating that the problem was not on the phone side (the update file) but rather router issues. I would get phone service, but no internet, either wireless or hardwired.
I agree with others on this forum, the new "free" router is way too buggy, and not worth the hassle until they (whoever that may be) gets it patched.

You can daisy-chain two routers, but it is not a good idea for several reasons:
1) each router does a network-address translation, which is always slow. When you are behind one router, you add 10-20ms to your ping time. Behind two - things get ugly: your network might work (see point 2), but it will be more latent. You might notice delays when you speak on the phone and your pages won't load as fast. Your service will still be as fast, but it will be slower to respond.
2) most routers like to give out addresses from 192.168.1.0/24. When you have two routers daisy-chained, the second router will see a 192.168.1 address on both of its interfaces. You might end up with routing problems.
As for your problem, I have a simiar one: I run servers and having a
Voip
adapter or a router before my computer is totally unacceptable. What I am planning to do is have a dedicated computer for a router with a wireless card to act as an access point.

Post subject: resolution to vonage internet routing
The problem with the router is this. It will get an ip address from your cable modem or dsl modem perfectly fine, The router then gives you the standard ip address (192.168.n.n), the problem is that is not routing any internet requests to the cable or dsl modem....
The way around it is to find out what your isp's dns server are, hard code them into you tcpip settings and your internet will work fine.
Linksys is blaming
Vonage
and vice versa.

makarcr: some people were having similar DNS problems with an older firmware version on the WRTP54G. What's your firmware version?
