What is the recommended setup for using two RT31P2s with the same Internet connection?

From what I can figure, it would probably be best for me to request a 2nd public IP address from my ISP and then connect both routers to a hub or switch connected to the cable modem.

I figure the above should work, but what should the QoS settings on the routers be so that they can both be used at the same time?

Also, is there a way to avoid getting a second IP address by chaining the routers together or would I compromise quality because of possibly losing QoS?

By the way, the speed test in this forum says my upload speed is 461 kbps so I don't anticipate a problem there. I'm only concerned about the QoS on 1 router reserving too much bandwidth causing the other router to not get enough bandwidth.

Thanks,

Maaz

A router let's you generate up to 255 private IP's, in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range. One must be used for the gateway, one is used for broadcast, so you would essentially be able to have 253 other devices connected.

In my configuration, I use a LinkSys wireless router for my laptop connection, run it to a switch and from there I use multiple servers, pcs' and have two Vonage boxes. I'm using only 1 public IP from my ISP. There is no need for you to purchase additional IP's from your ISP. The only limitation to the number of Vonage boxes you can have is your bandwidth, as you could continue to add more routers and other private IP's.

You would not have to have the additional router, I do it because sometimes it takes a while for the Vonage router to lock in to my internet connection if my dsl goes down for a few moments and so this configuration let's the rest of my network fun fine no matter what configurations I'm doing the Vonage box.

I don't think there's a "perfect" solution here, but you can probably get pretty close by enabling voice QoS on the first box, and also enabling Port-based QoS for the port connected to the second box. If possible, avoid connecting anything to the LAN ports of the second box.

Also, giving the second box a static IP and putting it in the DMZ of the first box might give you more reliable service.

Thanks for the information. I don't have a second box yet, but will give the suggestions a try once I do.

Spiffy, thanks for confirming that you are able to use both boxes with 1 public IP. I am aware that the router can generate 254 private IPs but I was concerned that one RT31P2 might tie up a particular port on the public IP adress that the second RT31P2 might need.

There will be only 2 computers, so connecting them both to the first box and connecting the 2nd RT31P2 to the third port seems to be a good idea. This way the computers will be on the same network anyway.

Paul, Now if I enable Port-based QoS, I assume I would give the port the other box is connected to a priority of "High" but what about the Flow Control and Ingress Rate Limit? For my Voice QoS, the QoS Upstream rate is currently set to 256 kb/s. Should I give the Ingress Rate Limit 128k since that would be half?

I'm not completely sure what the settings mean, but it seems like a good idea to leave the ingress rate limit disabled. You want to give the Vonage traffic priority, not limit it.

Flow control might be related to TCP streams, so that may not apply to Vonage, which uses connectionless UDP.

My hunch is that you should keep all the ingress limits turned off, and enable flow control for the two other ports only. But, it may require some experimentation, or a post from somebody with more experience with QoS.

A good way to test it is to make a phone call where you can listen to the other end. (a cell phone maybe) and start a big upload from your computer. If QoS isn't working properly, then your outgoing voice will get horribly delayed, and choppy.
