PostPosted: Mon Jan 05, 2004 2:32 pm    Post subject: Question regarding water meter line Reply with quote Back to top

My water meter is connected to a phone line that the local water company uses to dial in the water reading every month. If I switch to Vonage, will the water company encounter any problem dialing in? This is the only question that keeps me from signing into Voip service.

Could be a problem if you cannot reprogram the water company dialer to add the "1" before the dialed telephone number, that the Vonage system demands.

Actually, the water meters I am familiar with don't actually dial anything--the water company has equipment installed in the CO that electronically reads the meter without making a phonecall. Therefore, it is likely that your water meter could no longer be read if you do not have a phone number with your phone company.

I am in the same situation but may go for it anyway. It is the water company's problem to figure this out (and, in my case, their website is silend on this issue...)

what would your water company do if you didnt' have a phone line? just call them up and tell them you cancelled yoru phone line cuz it costs too much, and see what they say..

I dont' have a water meter, cuz we pay a flat rate here in my city.. Smile it's included in my electricity bill, which is another interesting setup, cuz we pre-pay it with a card and a card-reader on my wall..

Actually, the Vonage system takes eleven, ten or seven digit dialing. So whatever any dialer dials should work.

I was faced with the same issue. I use York Water in York, PA. I called them and let them know I was discontinuing my phone service and moving to a broadband Voip solution. They appreciated me informing them and said that there were other options that they may use to collect the meter info. I have been live on Vonage now for over 2 months and I have not heard back from them (though I still get a water bill Sad ) .

Yeah that should not keep you from deciding to switch. The water company can't require you to keep a phone line, and you know they'll find a way to get their money.

That water meter is not your property and you aren't responsible for it. If it were me I wouldn't even bother calling them. They won't be able to read the meter remotely and will send someone out to read it instead. If they have questions they will contact you, but at the end of the day its not your responsibility.

Yeah I agree with that part, also...you don't even need to call them.

And since your meter doesn't really "dial" them, I bet they can still monitor without you having active service, anyway.
