I have had the Vonage service for about a week now, but still am unable to get it up and running. I have spent numerous hours on the helpline to the Call centre in India and the US.

I have the Linksys RT31P2 router. The problem seems to be that my Broadband provider BulldogBroadband (www.bulldogbroadband.com) seems to use pppoA authentication, whereas the router will only accept pppoE. I have been told by the help desk in the US that it can be sorted out. The problem is that I have been unable to contact them since. I keep getting put through to the Call centre in India, and they dont seem to know about it.

Any help is much appreciated.

Maybe Vonage UK, should let us know these things when we sign up. I was extremely impressed by the service when I signed up, but this problem has let me down - big time.

as far as i know

if you are going to use the phone adaptor to authenticate your log on then select the pppo e and put in your bulldog log on id and password in the fields provided
.

but if you are letting your modem authenticate your log on to bulldog then select obtain an ip automatically on your phone adaptor.

i use the bt voyager 2100

that connects to the dsl line and i use that to authenticate with bt then i have the ethernet cable coming from one of the ports on the bt voyager to the internet socket on the phone adaptor the phone adaptor is set to obtain an ip address automatic and thats it Smile it all works fine for me.

i wasnt aware that Vonage opened a call centre in india unless they have just opened it.

how is bulldog anyway im thinking about moving over to them.

I am having the exact same problem. My provider is Namesco. The Indian tech support guy wasn't able to do more than read the script that involved changing the protocol used to PPPoE. He never even asked if that was the protocol my provider uses to authenticate!!!!! The US support isn't any help either. There is another 2 hours of my life down the tubes...

It seems like the routing table produced by the router are incorrect but I'm not sure. I was hoping someone else has solved this problem. I can connect to the DSL modem directly and it works. I can talk to the router. The router successfully gets an IP address from the modem.

Has anyone ever see the Internet Connection Type: "Obtain an IP automatically" work?

I think that Linksys forgot to put the route packets feature into this router...

Try using a port tester java site such as http://www.testyourvoip.com. If the test doesn't work, then your ISP or router or DSL modem is blocking ports 5060-5061. I keep hearing this stuff about PPPoA is incompatible with Voip, but if that were so, then there would be no Voip in most of the US west of the Mississippi (QWEST uses PPPoA and is about the only carrier out here).

I think the best thing to do is let your ADSL modem do the connecting to your ISP, I am not familiar with Bulldog, but if it is over your BT line then PPPOA is the norm, and is the UK standard. Plug your Vonage router into an RJ45 port on your modem and ensure it is set up to 'Obtain IP address automatically' .

I have inferred from other posts on the internet that some providers require you to use equipment provided by them. They enforce this by looking for their adapter's MAC address in the packets they receive from the internet. If your adapter's MAC is obscured by some router feature (potentially like NAT), then your adapter will not register and you can't use Voip. Does Vonage work like this?

Hello kepler2, I am really not sure, but I presume Vonage need some way of detecting authorised devices to stop fraud, maybe its best to contact them direct 0800 008 6000 or 150 from your UK Vonage line.
And check that with them.
Personally I have never had a problem and my ADSL router has and uses NAT. I dont even have to open ports and my firewall is secure.

I was actually with another major Voip provider using QWEST DSL in the western USA, not the UK. My Voip connection symptoms were very similar to those documented in this thread, hence my posts. My Voip provider refused to look at any logs or in any other way assist with troubleshooting since I connect to my ISP using PPPoA, so I have subsequently dropped my Voip service and signed on with another provider that does not require a fixed MAC address on the customer's end. We'll see if my new provider cures any of the problems.
