He didn't think it was unusual that I couldn't hear the Sky box dial out - he said Sky box was not recognising the dial tone.

I found that many of the tones on Vonage are incorrectly set for the UK. Dialtone for example has the incorrect audio levels, you will possibly find your set like this Dial Tone: 350@-19,440@-19;10(*/0/1+2)

The 440hz component of the tone should be 3db lower then the 350hz component therefore the -19 should be -21, my dialtone is now set as 350@-19,440@-21;10(*/0/1+2

Vonage are presently reviewing all tones for the UK and will be rolling out a modified set shortly.

Paul

I would guess a large part of this problem is that Sky need a UK-based line. Although Vonage specifically warn against taking their equipment abroad, and threaten disconnection if they discover you are initiating Vonage Voip calls from outside the UK, I don't know of any other Voip Service provider who does this, and I take my Voip ATA abroad to do precisely this (not a Vonage box, I hasten to add).

This means that if you could persuade Sky to accept Voip-initiated calls for them to check their multiroom conditions, etc, these could easily be from outside the UK- thus breaching their copyright agreements - or, even worse, from their point of view, might be multi-home, not multi-room.

From the "outside the Uk" point of view,it's only in the letter of the law, anyway. It's widely acknowledged that Sky turn a blind eye to their estimated 500,000 expat subscribers, because they can't afford to cut off that many subscribers.

were wondering off topic a little here people.
we really need to get this sorted
let me run the list off so far

1 sky wont work over Vonage Embarassed

2 sky boxes contain a v90 modem (boxes built by pace) correct me if wrong

3 Vonage lines are compressed

4 modem connections over Vonage seem to be a max of 28.8 33 if you are lucky

5 sky box modem do not accept any commands apart from a extension number

6 sky box needs to make 1 call per month via 0800 number on the same cli

7 sky will send you a letter after 2 months of no calls (copy available on request)

8 does not need to be bt can be telewest ntl

9 i have connected to sky via laptop modem at 28.8 any faster call fails

10 solution either Vonage needs to accept v90 calls or sky modem needs to be slowed down

11 HHHHEEELLLPPP Question Question Question Question Question

as a quick test i have successfully connected to various isp,s (ntl virgin bt aol) at 28.8 33.6 fails most of the time

OK, so now I've got to the stage of the letter from Sky ... what do I do now?

Do I have to fork out on another land line from BT or NTL? So I end up with my phone costing me more than it did before I had Vonage!

Aaargh, this is not good.

Anyone got any advice?

Is there any way we could slow down the Sky dial out eg by putting something on the telephone line eg another modem?
Just showing my ignorance, but you never know ...

not sure really the sky box only wants to connect at v90 speeds any slower and it fails to connect not sure if thats sky or the box
as far as i no there are no settings any were in the sky box to slow it down
now i can understand if sky wants you to connect at the fastest speed possible cos its dialing a 0800 number they are paying for but what happens if you have a low quality telephone line and can only connect at 28.8 i no this isn't as common as it used to be but there must be a few out there what does sky do then just cut ya off

there must be a way of slowing the sky down or conning the box into thinking its a low quality line so it slows down

I haven't tried making a Sky box connect for a few weeks, but now I have, and I appear to now be at the stage others are at - the dial tone is recognised by Sky. If I do a "System Test" it tells me the phone is connected - more than I've ever had before.

However, if I (for example) try and view my statement it fails. The error tells me to contact customer service on 0870 5300557 and report error code 130.

My phone log shows these calls being placed:
12-Sep-2005 21:49 448000279013 00:00:31
12-Sep-2005 21:44 448000279013 00:00:33
12-Sep-2005 21:33 448007317929 00:00:15

I think the 21:49/21:44 ones are viewing my statement.

So, I tried Sky Active and got the same error code and customer service number.

Is this the same as others have got?

Ian
