I'm wondering why
Vonage
is not available in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Alaska? Are there plans to move into those areas?
You forget Hawaii!
And
I
forgot West Virginia!

its because the majority of those states do not have high quality broadband, or mostly remote areas which supply satellite connections only. therefore the cost of going into that market -vs- the profit we would make is not a big difference (from my point of view)
So, if the cost of going in those states versus the profit you would make is not a big difference, then why not go in? That sounds kind of messed up. Just forget the people up there, even if the cost to do it versus the profit isn't that big a margin, huh?

cap·i·tal·ism
n.
An economic system in which the means of production and distribution are privately or corporately owned and development is proportionate to the accumulation and reinvestment of profits gained in a free market.

not to be pedantic, but the phrase "customer service" is a noun.

Post subject: Federal help needed?
In the past it has taken organizations like the REA (Rural Electrification Administration) to run the last mile (or last 100 miles) for those sparse areas.
Also, there are fees charged on POTS that subsidize rural phone companies, but
Vonage
and other
Voip
providers can't take advantage of the subsidies.
As for the broadband, there are methods being tested in rural areas, notibly Broadband over Powerline (BPW) and long-range wireless. They just aren't quite there yet.
For those in Billings and Butte, I am sure there is a
Voip
provider that can get to you, just not
Vonage
, yet. Check back next month, things are exploding with
Voip
.

Post subject: The white states
On some level, it does not matter if you cannot get local area code for your state. On most cell phones, and on
Vonage
and other
Voip
, you get charged for the minutes and not the distance, so if you lived in Wyoming or North Dakota and had, just as an example, a
Vonage
box with a 305 (miami) or 212 (manhattan) number, and all your friends who might call you had cell phones or
Voip
phones, then it really would not matter that you did not have a local area code, except psychologically. On some level, local area codes do not matter anymore. If everyone went
Voip
or Cell phone, then area code would not really matter anymore except, perhaps for businesses which might want to have a telno associating them with someone specific geographic region. So, if you live in Wyoming and want
Vonage
, why not just get a number with an area code from some other location?
